Dear Bloomfield Hills Schools Community,
Yesterday evening there was an incident involving a suspicious person in our community. We have been working closely with the Bloomfield Township Police Department and have the following information to share.
-
On Thursday, September 7, 2023, around 3:55 - 4:10 p.m., a man approached a Way Elementary student on school property during dismissal. The man said “hey” to the student and requested the student come with him in his vehicle and he would give the student candy at his house.
-
The person is described as a white, thin build, approximately 6 feet tall, 30-40 year old male. He was wearing jeans and a gray hoodie, with his hoodie on his head. He had facial hair on his chin and light colored hair.
- There will be an increased police presence at all of our elementary schools today.
We applaud this student for being diligent of their surroundings, notifying a trusted adult, and explaining the situation clearly to their parents, school administration, and our police partners.
The Bloomfield Township Police Department would like families to please:
- Not engage and to call the police if anyone approaches you or your children inappropriately.
-
Requests that anyone at Way Elementary around 3:55 - 4:10 p.m. with a vehicle recording or other electronic recording, to please review it and contact our School Resource Officer, Tom Riney, via email at tri...@bloomfieldtwp.org. Please also contact Office Riney if you have any information to share about this incident.
Student safety is our top priority and we are grateful for our partnerships with the Bloomfield Township Police Department. If there are additional updates to share, we will be sure to inform the community.
As always, it is important to speak with your children about stranger danger, being vigilant about knowing your surroundings, contacting a trusted adult when something doesn't look or feel right, and calling 911 if someone approaches them.
Sincerely,
Randy Liepa
Interim Superintendent
