Hi BHS Orienteers,

Tomorrow is another league meet, this time nearby, on the Oakland hills skyline.  League meets are no harder than practice events, but they do give you and the team valuable season points.

I will be driving, and probably have plenty of room.  There is a second car too.
Contact me if you want a ride.

This map has a lot of history (revisions, overgrowth, etc), so it will be inconsistent and have more apocrypha than usual.  Trust the contour lines and major trails more than the vegetation or minor trails.

For most O events, there is a minimum distance between controls (across all courses).  This event will, unusually, have many extra controls in close proximity.  Be sure to check the control code _before_ punching.

As always, carefully read the meet director and course setter's notes if you might attend.

For people beyond Orange, there is an unusual three-part Sprint format.  In Orienteering, "Sprint" just means lots of short legs.  You can try it in the "tournament" style, or just on your own.  They would like email RSVPs if possible, if you want to try this one.

They need more volunteers.  Volunteering for BAOC events has many advantages.  If you're working on a PE Waiver, you get some credit for volunteer tasks.  Also you need to have volunteered in the past 12 months to attend Bon Tempe in December.  This is a free volunteer-appreciation meet at a beautiful park in Marin.  Students and parents can volunteer in advance, or at the meet.

Steps:

a) Those under 18 will need a parent-signed waiver.  If a parent isn't attending, print and sign the following (once per event).  They'll fill out the rest at registration.
http://baoc.org/pdfs/entry_form.pdf

b) Carpool if possible, or arrive at the park between 9 and 12.  Parking will be easy and free.

c) Go to the registration table.  The reg volunteers will help you through everything.

d) In choosing a course, first-timers take White or maybe Yellow.  If you've completed only white, choose Yellow.  If you find yellow easy, move up to Orange / JV.  Those who complete Orange consistently may want to move to the "Sprint".

e) If you're relatively new, consider attending one of the short, free Beginner's Clinics.  Just ask at reg.

f) If you start on a course, you must report to the finish afterwards, even if you didn't find everything.  Otherwise, they send out a search party.

g) After your first course, you may choose to re-register and go out for a different second course, either harder or easier.

Cost: about $5-8.

All you need to do is bring a signed waiver and money, show up, register, and complete a course.  Wear walking, hiking, or running gear.  Bring a compass and estick if you have them.  Maybe bring a snack for after.

Thanks,
Wayne
