Hi everyone

A big thank you to everyone who was able to attend last Wednesday's meeting. It was great to see so many familiar and new faces round the table. This will be a quick email to alert you to the date of upcoming events, plus give you details of some interesting projects -  including Melita's interesting 'The Professions - that might be of interest to you -, the groups you work with, or people you know in the community. Please do pass this information on.

Stay in touch with us - join our group on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/groups/120760214630938/ Twitter: @btncommreporter

Firstly - tonight is the Hack/Hackers meeting at the Eagle, 6-8pm. http://2012.brightondigitalfestival.co.uk/event/hackshackers-brighton-september-meet-up/ (see below for more info)

On Saturday, there's an opportunity for you all to get involved in a pop up newsroom and contribute to a new ongoing platform for your reporting at Pop up Newsroom at Mini Maker Faire. They will be set up from 10am-2pm, but it is suggested that interested reporters come along at 10am to get signed up. We were thinking of a theme - perhaps 'a Day in the Life of Brighton.' I will be there from 10am to assist any community reporter - my number is 07775615817. Let me know if you are planning to come - or just turn up.

Also on that day is Bev Fest, 2-8pm, out in Bevendean - perhaps a good place to go do interviews with locals?

On Wednesday 12th September. 6.15-7.30 is the introductory meeting for RadioReverb “My London Road”, an oral history project. At Caffe Moksha, 4-5 York Place  Brighton, BN1 4GU (opposite St Peter’s Church)

The date of the next Community Reporter Meet up, provisionally at Lord Nelson again, is Mon 17 Sept, 7.30-9.30pm. I will confirm venue closer to the date.

Look forward to seeing you this week - if not tonight!

Best wishes
Amy

Pop-up newsroom: Hacks/Hackers Brighton is becoming a Maker at the Mini Maker Faire. From 10am-2pm the Founders Room at the Brighton Dome will become a digital newsroom, allowing those who attend the Maker Faire to learn skills in digital news production. The event is free and all are welcome.

What is the Mini Maker Faire?

Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth – a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning. Activities for all ages include arts & crafts, robots and engineering, wood and metalwork, electronics, science, tech, music and more amazing do-it-yourself creation.

Over 5,000 people piled into the Dome for the first Brighton Mini Maker Faire in 2011, to witness the mind-boggling home-made creations of the best inventors, crafters, hackers and DIY-ers from across the UK – and they got involved: making, experimenting, playing, learning and interacting.

Brighton Digital Festival is a celebration of digital culture. It is run by members of Brighton's arts and digital communities, administered by Wired Sussex in association with Lighthouse and supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

What is Hacks/Hackers Brighton?

A get together for journalists (hacks), developers (hackers) and designers to share information and ideas.

Hacks/Hackers is a global movement where hacks (journalists) and hackers (developers) meet for talks, demos, hackathons and socials. It started in San Francisco and New York in 2009 and there are now 30 meet-up groups across five continents (see the Hacks/Hackers site).

The goal of Hacks/Hackers is to create a "network of journalists and technologists who rethink the future of news and information".

Organised by Journalism.co.uk, Hacks/Hackers Brighton launched at the Brighton Digital Festival in September 2011 and draws on the wealth of talent in and around Brighton.

1. CSV – The Professionals

CSV is the UK’s largest volunteering charity. “The Professionals” is a new scheme where people with professional skills gained through their work, hobbies or a personal passion or experience, share that with a community group or charity.

It can be a one-off activity or a longer-term involvement – it’s entirely up to you. Examples for community reporters could be:

- taking photos at a community event for their website or newsletter

- writing a press release for an event

- proof-reading a newsletter

- helping set up a Twitter feed or Facebook group

- becoming a Trustee

To find out more, here’s the local blog site with some examples of activities

2. RadioReverb “My London Road”

“My London Road” is an oral history project gathering the stories of people who live, work, shop and socialise around London Road. We are gathering the stories to produce short ardio features and maybe a documentary for RadioReverb.

The first meeting for potential contributors to find out more is

Wednesday 12th September. 6.15-7.30

at Caffe Moksha, 4-5 York Place  Brighton, BN1 4GU (opposite St Peter’s Church)

·         We're the Brighton-based contingent of Sound Women, the 700-strong network of women working in audio. Sound Women is committed to raising the profile of women working in radio and audio, and getting the radio industry to be more representative.

We held our first Brighton meet-up in early August. Guest speaker Maria Williams who founded SoundWomen in London gave us some background to Sound Women and we discussed ideas and future plans.
