Subject: An event for your hall
To:

Dear Quad Resident Advisor,

My name is Amy Cass, and I'm a sophomore who is serving as a Moral Voices Fellow for the 2012-2013 school year. Moral Voices is a social justice group on campus that works to create an on-campus dialogue about some of the most pressing moral issues in the world today. Our focus for this year is "Post Conflict Recovery and Development," and we have the culminating event for the semester, a keynote speaker event, coming up this Wednesday, March 20th, at 7:30 PM in Harrison Auditorium (Penn Museum).

This speaker event will focus on the crisis in the Sudan that resulted in the 2011 creation of the new nation of South Sudan. We are welcoming two speakers: John Bul Dau, a former "Lost Boy of Sudan" who fled his home under fear of death and eventually reached the United States from a refugee camp, becoming an advocate for the Sudanese cause, and John Prendergast, an activist who has been working in the Sudan and throughout Africa for over 25 years, has served on numerous political organizations both domestically and internationally, and continues to monitor the ever-changing situation there. The two men will focus on how to lead and react in a morally challenging situation and talk about our moral obligations as a nation, a society, and an individual.

I would like to encourage you to organize a trip to this free speaker event for your hall. It will provide great food-for-thought for a discussion, not only about the situation in the Sudan, but about the moral challenges we face everyday when looking to donate time or money to an international cause. Even if you cannot take them as a hall (I realize this is fairly short notice), please encourage them to go as a way to gain a new perspective on an important international issue from two prominent activists. Attached at the bottom of the email is a write up about the event, if you would like to send that out to them.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and I will hopefully see you there!

Thanks a lot,

Amy

Moral Voices Presents: "IN PURSUIT OF JUSTICE:" John Prendergast and John Bul Dau
Wednesday, March 20th
7:30 PM
Harrison Auditorium, Penn Museum

Join Moral Voices for the Merrin Distinguished Lecture Series as we present our annual keynote speaker. This event features John Prendergast and John Bul Dau, two of the most distinguished individuals in the field of Human Rights, Genocide Education and Refugee Advocacy. Prendergast is the co-founder of the Enough Project, an initiative to end genocide and crimes against humanity that is affiliated with the Center for American Progress, and has been an advocate for Africa for over 25 years. He has worked with numerous government departments and international agencies. Dau is a "Lost Boy of Sudan," one of nearly 27,000 who escaped from Southern Sudan in the late 1980's and was eventually resettled in America. He founded the Sudanese Lost Boys of New York Foundation and the John Dau Foundation, and continues to be one of the leading experts on the conflict.  They will be speaking about their personal journeys and how each of them came to work as activists for Africa. Their sagas will be followed by a discussion and questions from the audience. The event will be moderated by Dau Jok, a Penn student who started his own foundation to benefit the youth of South Sudan. Don't miss this opportunity to see two of the foremost experts on the conflict in Sudan discuss together their experiences working in the Sudan and their thoughts on what the global community can do to solve it. Come find your moral voice!
