Dear Shree Rudra JI,
Thank You.
I very much appreciate your response, indicating perhaps, your confidence in me etc..
Yes, Okay, photosynthesis can be thought of as involving physics and chemistry of matter,
Similarly, physics and chemistry theoretic explanation or modeling can be done whenever
processes involve materials or material changes in one way or another.
However, when life is also involved, matter-based explaining or modeling will not work adequately,
it will not be like a full scientific type explanation, although some may like to view it that way,
perhaps leaving the inadequate parts for future science etc.
And, as you have indicated, life is dependent on other life for survival and progress.
Only plant life seems to have independent style existence, ability to directly draw upon
non-living entities, like soil, water, photons (perhaps any light okay ?), for sustenance
and growth.
However, even here, the starting point is a seed or sapling or so, just mixing of chemicals
will not be sufficient to start new plant life.
And dead leaves or dead plants do not do photosynthesis.
So, Life or a living entity is more than just matter, we can say.
Physics etc, science and its theories, are models and the explanations are done within those
models. Such modeling generally have their limitations, and regions of validity, These may be
associated with the assumptions, whether inherent or explicit or not, consistency and coherence
requirements, not being self-contradictory etc. Over-generalization, over-extrapolation if done,
the theory or the model may not work well in the extrapolated domains.
In my previous email I had mentioned Shree M S Nayak's influence and help to me in younger years.
There was also Shree T Srinivas Pai, the Chemistry Dept Head and Shree Rev Fr L F Rasquinha,
the Principal there at St Aloysius College, Mangalore, whose guidance and help turned out to be
very important for my forward path, for choices made at the time regarding study subjects,
project work for scholarship, further education path.
Initially I was in the path for going to medicine as per the family hopes and desires from my very young years,
but my love for continuing studying Mathematics was too strong, I was not much attracted towards biology,
In fact, soon after joining the Biology batch (needed for medical line) in college, I was concerned that the biology
lab involved dissection of frogs and I was not sure if I would like it. Yet, I had initially planned to wait till those
lab experiments started, but that got delayed again and again, and finally I made the switch to PCM before it
may have become impossible to do so, (while I was still keeping up with the Math class progress with help
from my friends, especially my high school classmate friend Prabhakar. That choice had to be made then at the
PUC level (which is like 11th grade), either PCB or PCM, that is Physics and Chemistry and either Biology or Math.
Shree T Srinivas Pai invited me to work with him in the Chemistry labs (during holidays / vacations), for the
project work that was required (in addition to the written exam), for the NSTS National Science Talent Search
Scholarship Exam. He also suggested a project work topic which I did, namely "Chemical Analysis of Palm Sugar
and Sugar Candy". He in fact got those local products for me to analyze in the lab, all done as guided by him.
This was in the 1968-69 academic year when I was in PUC Pre University Course, after finishing 10th Std, and
SSLC Secondary School Leaving Certificate Exam which was a common exam for all students in the whole
state, then Mysore State, later renamed Karnataka State.
My elder brother was already in engineering college at the time, and unemployment was considered high for
engineering degree holders also. Moreover, most jobs were far away from our region, so I did not even
consider going to engineering. With BSc andor M Sc degrees jobs would be a lot easier, it was felt. At that age,
we were not thinking about pay or salary amounts, standard of living etc concepts. But, we just knew that a job
or a career would be needed.
I got the NSTS Scholarship, but the nearest approved college was in Bangalore. Also it seems I could have been
directly admitted to IIT (nearest in Madras), if I wanted, because of my securing First Rank in PUC in University
of Mysore. But I had not applied anywhere, had made no moves, not sure what to do, and the next academic
year classes had already started, it was 1969 June.
Then when I met the Principal, Rev. Fr. Rasquinha at his office in the college, he suggested I bring my father,
which I did. He suggested and guided us for me to join BSc (Hons) in Physics at St Joseph's College in
Bangalore, staying there in the Hostel. We took his note, and the bus the next day.
