It reads =  12/3/25 Lavanya, amma/atthe has improved a lot in recent weeks, and more is expected, I think, as she has been under lots of HUGE, BIG stress because of past happenings.  An opportunity to read the poems she has written from memory to a Havyaka or Kannada audience (you sit with her on the stage or chair in house for this for extra support) will be GREAT. maambaLa for you, Raja, Sudha also included.   - Raya

Shilpi, and here below is (our many thanks to Kavi for scanning a copy of it I had, some ten days back) ajji's long 27 pages essay, hand-written in Kannada many years ago, like in 1990s or early 2000s or so, based on her then visit to USA. It was written in Kannada. And from what I remember (?), it was published in a Havyaka or Kannada magazine in Mangalore, after they returned to India, perhaps in a shortened version of it. i had suggested it then,  I had over-heard her saying, perhaps to Sudha chikkamma or someone else, when they were at our then home in Howell NJ, that maybe she would also have become "ushaari" like Usha, that is smart-successful like her daughter, "aanu kalthiddare", if she had better education opportunities. Actually, even now, she keeps saying that now and then, repeatedly very often, almost every day or every opportunity she gets or she makes to say it, we can perhaps say, that she was not able to go to high school because of her father's brother did not allow his daughter (who was her classmate, so they would have walked to school together for company, for safety) to continue to high school, saying something like "aDige maneli ippavakke kaliyuvike enthake", that is "why education for those who are in the kitchen".it was then considered as not needed, not important for girls. The high school was a bit farther away than her elementary school, it was in Vitla town, a few miles away, also involved crossing a river for walking there from their Kinila / Killa home, so going alone was not considered as practical or safe. Then following the Hindi language tutoring offer by a teacher nearby, she did the special private study for Hindi language exams, and passed them. Thus, she learnt Hindi very well, It was the only other study opportunity she had then,
