Hi Thirumala This is Alvin
Me:
Hi Alvin
How r U ?
Alvin Diaz
Hello Mr Halemane
I am blessed, how about yourself
How's everything coming along in life with your family and your books ?
Me:
OKay, Nice to chat with you. I am doing good as well
I guess, it is the way it is, trying to do our best under the circumstances
Alvin Diaz
I understand I did get a chance to review your email
And I have some questions for you so I can understand the objective and the scope of your work
Me:
Back in 1990s,after I was fired in 1992 from my good job at Bell Labs AT&T, my wife said NO BOOK writing, (many people wrote books about their experiences and made money, as we read in the news). And I respected her wishes, she was already under a lot of stress, and I felt that I may not have to do book writing for money for living, that is about our story, and I have continued in that fashion.
Alvin Diaz
Could you please share a general idea of how you're planning to put these books together and publish them?
That's a pretty good explanation of journey in few simple words
I think the best way to express yourself is to Jot it down
I myself I write about 3,000 per day
I mean 3,000 words
Thank you for sharing your writings, thoughts, and family photographs with me.
I can see that your material covers a wide range of topics, including your personal life journey, family history, spiritual beliefs, experiences in your professional career, community involvement, perspectives on historical and political issues, and your hopes for your children and future generations. The photographs also appear to be an important part of preserving your family's story and legacy.
Me:
Ac it stands, I have only written to make things available, it is not a priority for me to sell books, so I ,, am kind of stuck there, if I can use such description
Alvin Diaz
As we continue discussing your book project, I would like to better understand how you envision the final manuscript. At this stage, the material reads as a combination of personal memoir, family history, reflections, commentary, and collected writings. To help shape it into a book that readers can easily follow, it would be helpful to identify the primary focus of the project.
I understand, and that's actually very helpful for me to know.
Not every book project begins with the goal of selling books. Some authors write to preserve their life story, document family history, share their experiences, leave a legacy for future generations, or make their thoughts and observations available to others.
From what you've shared so far, I see several possible directions for your work, including:
• Your personal journey and experiences after Bell Labs
• Your family history and legacy, including the photographs you've collected
• Your spiritual and philosophical reflections
• Your community involvement and temple activities
• Your perspectives on history, society, and world affairs
To help me understand your vision, I'd like to ask a simple question:
Me:
Yes, Please go ahead
Alvin Diaz
If someone were to read your book 20 or 50 years from now, what would you most want them to remember or learn from it?
Your answer will help us determine whether this is primarily a memoir, a family legacy book, a collection of reflections, or something else entirely.
Me:
Hmmm.. Your question is very valid, but I do not really have an answer for it. My guess is different readers may view it differently, as per their own individual perspective. It does not matter much for me whatever they wish to take from it. The story is told, that is all I can expect, and what I can be concerned about or my interest in it, we can say. The truth from my perspective is not erased, and that is all that I am thinking about now, whatever happens in another 50 years or so in the future
I think you can understand it that "The truth is not erased", that is I am putting a lot of emphasis on the truth, as opposed to maufactured perceptions. Sorry, there may be a hint of inviisible stuff underlying the state of affairs we are in.
Alvin Diaz
I understand what you're saying, Thirumala.
What I'm hearing is that, for you, the most important thing is preserving your account of events and experiences as you saw and lived them. Whether readers ultimately agree, disagree, or draw different conclusions is secondary to making sure your perspective and recollections are documented and available.
From a publishing standpoint, that gives us a useful starting point because many memoirs and personal histories are written for exactly that reason to create a record of a person's experiences, observations, and understanding of the events that shaped their life.
What I'd like to understand next is how much material you already have available. For example:
• Do you have journals, notes, emails, letters, or articles that you've written over the years?
• Have you already organized any of the photographs and documents chronologically?
• Would you see this as one comprehensive book, or potentially a series of books covering different aspects of your life and experiences?
The more I understand what material already exists, the better I can advise you on the best way to organize and preserve your story.
Me:
Thanks for your understanding and support.
They are all there, chronologically also, online parts as well as some paper, photographs, audio, video. Online mostly in posts and emails
Alvin Diaz
That's actually very encouraging, Thirumala.
Many authors come to us with only an idea and have not yet gathered their materials. In your case, it sounds like you've already spent years documenting your thoughts, experiences, correspondence, photographs, and records.
Me:
Okay. I think, in some instances, I was just doing things more by impulse-reactions of the moments, and it turned out that some purpose was served, my not fully being aware of it then, looking back now
Alvin Diaz
That makes sense, Thirumala.
Me:
In othe words, impulse reactions have their own underlying causes, and those impulse reactions are not necessarily avoidable also
Alvin Diaz
In fact, some of the most interesting memoirs and personal histories are built from writings that were created in the moment rather than reconstructed years later. Looking back, people often discover patterns, themes, and connections that were not obvious when they were living through those experiences.
What stands out to me is that you already have a substantial archive emails, posts, photographs, documents, audio, and video which gives us a rich source of material to work with.
From a publishing perspective, the next step may not be writing entirely new content, but rather identifying and organizing the most important pieces into a coherent narrative.
To help me evaluate the scope of the project, can you estimate approximately how much material you have? For example, are we looking at hundreds of pages, thousands of pages, or many years of collected correspondence and writings?
That will help me determine whether this is best approached as a single volume, a multi-volume memoir, or a curated collection of your writings and reflections.
Me:
It could be a thousand pages or more if everything put together, to sort out and organize.
Alvin Diaz
How about we have multiple editions of this book like a series of books by Thirumala
Me:
a few thousand photo graphs, maybe 199 hours of audio and video.
100 hours not 199
Me:
Yes, a series of books may work well
Alvin Diaz
That helps put the scope into perspective, Thirumala.
Based on what you've described a thousand or more pages of writings, several thousand photographs, and approximately 100 hours of audio and video it sounds like you have enough material for far more than a single traditional book.
My initial thought is that trying to fit everything into one volume may not do justice to the breadth of your archive. A multi-volume series or a collection of related books may be a more practical approach.
Me:
Okay
Alvin Diaz
For example, one volume could focus on your life journey and personal experiences, another on family history and photographs, and others on your reflections, correspondence, community activities, and observations over the years.
Me:
Okay
Alvin Diaz
Excellent. I think we're beginning to see a practical path forward.
Based on everything you've shared, I would recommend treating this as a legacy book series rather than a single manuscript.
The amount of material you have writings, photographs, emails, documents, audio, and video suggests that there are multiple stories and themes that could each become a volume of their own.
Me:
OK
Alvin Diaz
Based on our discussion, I believe your material could be developed into a multi-volume legacy series rather than a single book. With the amount of written content, photographs, correspondence, audio, and video you have collected over the years, I can see the potential for approximately 5 to 7 books.
A possible structure could be:
Book 1: The Truth Is Not Erased
Your personal life journey, formative experiences, career path, Bell Labs years, challenges, and major turning points.
Book 2: Family, Roots, and Legacy
Family history, ancestry, photographs, traditions, memories, and the people who shaped your life.
Book 3: Reflections on Dharma and Life
Your spiritual, philosophical, and personal reflections gathered over the years.
Book 4: Community, Service, and Temple Journeys
Your involvement in community organizations, temple activities, cultural initiatives, and leadership experiences.
Book 5: Letters, Writings, and Observations
A curated collection of correspondence, essays, commentaries, and documented thoughts.
Book 6: Perspectives on Society, History, and the Future
Your views on historical events, public issues, social change, and future possibilities.
Book 7: The Halemane Family Archive
A visual legacy volume featuring photographs, captions, family stories, and historical documentation.
From a publishing standpoint, I would recommend beginning with Book 1: The Truth Is Not Erased because it provides readers with the foundation of your life story and creates the context for the volumes that follow.
Me:
Hmm.. Very interesting way you have thought of for organizing it. Thank You, Alvin.
Alvin Diaz
Thank you, Thirumala. I’m glad the structure resonates with you.
What I’ve outlined is just a working framework to help bring clarity to the scope of your material.
The next step, would be to begin organizing the first set of documents and identifying the content that should go into Book 1 and then rest of the series.
Now If we talk about the publishing platforms. Are you familiar with platforms like Amazon KDP, Barnes & Noble, Ingram Spark and others?
Me:
Not familiar with any
Alvin Diaz
That’s completely fine most first-time authors are not familiar with those platforms at this stage.
What I would suggest is that we take things step by step. Today we’ve already achieved the most important part, which is identifying the scope of your material and shaping it into a clear multi-volume structure.
The publishing platforms like Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, and others are the retail book stores online where we can make your book available in three formats like ebook, paperback and hardcover Your book would be available on 20+ Major best selling stores
So it can reach out to the wider audience and for printing and distribution of your book we are going to setup a print on demand service that will allow amazon and other platforms to print your book and send it to the readers directly
Doesn't matter if anyone wants to purchase paperback or a hardcover edition
Me:
hmmm,, ok
Alvin Diaz
Do you have any questions so far?
Me:
No. Thanks for your time, efforts, thoughts looking into this. I am honored, happy, pleased by it
