Dear Thirumala,
Prof C K Raju is one of Prof Nisa Khan’s colleagues and he raises excellent points about the History of Mathematics and how it is taught.
It’s a bit long so make popcorn sit back and prepare to be impressed.
Here are his writings on the deColonization of Mathematics in Bahrat.
Best,
Dr. Cliff

Me:
Okay

Thanks

Me:
Dear Dr. Cliff, Thanks for those references above, links to Prof C K Raju's video and work. I watched the video. Yes, indeed, it is amazing, lots of good info, perspectives on how Mathematics has developed, colonial impacts on education etc. Very impressive in its own way.
By the way, I have an MA in Maths also, and, although I was always much interested in Maths, I decided that I did not want to go much deeper than that into it, and that I felt better about doing things that are more likely to be viewed as being in the applications realm, not just "theoretical" for its own sake.
I have done research work in theoretical physics back then. PhD in Physics, and later for some years of research & teaching, also in industry. Now, totally out of touch with my past work fields for many many years.

(my reaction 🙏)

Me:
Dr Cliff,
I remember a conversation with my sister-in-law Sudha Kailar about subject fields, and I said "even Mathematics is only a model". It was back in 1983-84 when we were at State University College, Fredonia NY. I do not remember exactly, but very likely I was commenting on the common notion many of us had then about "pure Mathematics", that is "purity" of Mathematics, which was, in sone sense, considered as the "purest" of the sciences, others like physics for example, involves various approximations in its progress, way forward etc. and perhaps this is where the "theology" and the Church factor that is mentioned in that talk by video by Prof C K Raju can be connected. O am offering my take or opinion about it. Ancient Indian approach to Science or Mathematics "GANITHA" or Knowledge, is not limited or "constricted" by such type "reasoning", but the effort there is for embracing truth, in all its aspects, including feasible or needed or existing or possible or impossible etc aspects, which we may consider is like the "involving Infinity" claim by the speaker in that talk. As we know, "theological purity" notion relates or exists or put forth by people in religions also, for the progress of their agendas. and it has its own impacts, repercussions, in the real world. Thanks for bearing with me, my guesses and opinions.

Me:
In many cases, including in physics, we often forget the "assumptions". and there could be some implied assumptions which are not stated. For example, in Mechanics, the many body problem is considered not solvable exactly, but Mechanics can make progress and deliver useful results for applications in spite of this huge handicap or difficulty

Me: .. false accusations are even made by individuals who may justify it to themselves and those around them in the name of justifiable "politics" for manufacturing perceptions for helping in their agendas, (and I have seen it happen, with our temple efforts in New Jersey, during HTCS-HATCC merger talks, with people pushing for such a goal, to eliminate HATCC, to help the agenda of HTCS by deliberately bad-mouthing HATCC, its leaders, objectives etc, even mis-representations, false accusations also, back in 1990-91, early 1990s timeframe. The Indian American community here has come a long way since then; much transformation has happened.
Our temple effort, with its own community-internal & external politics, here in New Jersey, and its influence & impacts, here and beyond, including in USA, India, worldwide, on Hindus, Indians, as well as others, all people, has been pivotal, served as turning point, transformation catalyst, since 1987, and has opened up new ways, new possibilities, new views, new attitudes, new approaches for doing things, for life and living !!! (rest deleted here for brevity)

Chethan Rao   9:03 PM
Doing good. How are you?

Me:
I am fine, Thanks for asking

Chethan Rao   10:18 PM
You are brother of our nitk dean halamane sir
I remember meeting him in second year

Chethan Rao   10:20 PM
My mama also worked in bell labs, Subramanya shastry.do you know him?

Sep 21, 2024
Me:
Nice
Yes, I am his younger brother

Me:
I may have left Bell Labs by that time? I may have seen him, but do not remember.

Me:
Also, I was working in Holmdel and Red Hill facilities of Bell Labs, in New Jersey, June 1985 to March 1992, but I did know a few others who worked elsewhere, like Murray Hill, Chicago etc, Do you know more about your mama, where and when in Bell Labs ?

Me:
My elder brother (who was also in Bell Labs in 1980s, and it was him who made it possible for me to get that job offer), Prof Keshava Prasad Halemane, now lives in Bikarnakatte, Mangalore, having retired from NITK AROUND 2017 or so, got his new house built and moved out of campus faculty quarters after retirement

Chethan Rao   9:34 AM
He worked from 79 I think
And then he worked at telcordia also after bell split
Nice to know about halamane sir

Chethan Rao   9:42 AM
I think he graduated in 68 from krec
My uncle

Me:
Oh, Okay, so he must have been in Bellcore when I joined, because then it was already split into BellCore (which became Telcordia much later I think) and AT&T Bell Labs. I have met some people in Bell Core through our friends Dinesh Nettar (also from Mangalore region, my elder brother's classmate) who was working in Bellcore there in Holmdel itself then, but later they moved to Piscataway, and they did interview me before I joined Bell Labs, and also in mid 1990s after I lost my Bell labs job thanks to Dinesh there, but both times no job offer, and it is very likely that he had introduced me to your mama Subramanya Shastry, or it could be in Dinesh's house also at some gathering (I remember one especially, with many many invitees, it was when one IIT Madras Professor Subbu (?) of Chemistry and Special Instruments Lab, whom I also knew (when I did MSc in Physics there), had come visiting, he was Dinesh's PhD advisor there, I think, also helped me with my MSc dissertation.

Chethan Rao   10:46 AM

Chethan Rao   10:48 AM
Yup Dinesh nettar knows my mama. See him as a mutual connection

Me:
was she in Bellcore /Telcordia or Bell Labs medical service area ?

Chethan Rao   12:17 PM
Not sure
Medical
Mostly
Dinesh uncle may know more

Me:
Chethan, I could be wrong, but I think I vaguely remember seeing an Indian name on one of the rooms in the medical service area, (a few doctors and nurses were there I think, but usually we did not go there, and were using our own health plan physicians, it was more like for emergency and other working hours type needs, and once my Supervisor had asked me to go there and talk to a psychologist type physician, it was when he was pushing me out from his group I think, maybe it was needed for his own sake, for HR or legal justifications perhaps, i am guessing here, and that went fine, so the management must have felt that  they need not worry about me, in psychological terms,  regarding their actions). So, it is possible that she may have been working in Bell Labs, in 1989 or so timeframe, or it could have been a different name, or  i could be wrong also about it

Chethan Rao   12:44 PM
I am not sure if she worked when you were there

Me:
Okay

Me:
This is my elder brother's contact info. I think he will appreciate hearing from an old student from his college, usually it is a pleasure for a faculty member to hear from old students, although many students do not do it and worry if such contacting will be considered as annoying or waste of time. But, I am sure that it is a good thing, even if it was not a fully pleasant past experience, and that does not matter much for the faculty member, he or she will not be keeping such grudges or feelings, the relationship is more of parental type. So, please feel free to contact him, etc. His two sons are now working in USA, daughter is a faculty member at Ayurvedic college in Moodabidri.

We are brahmins. I grew up in barkur. Went to school there in brahmavar little rock Indian school.

Yeah

Me:
Shastry could be in Haveeka, Madhwa, various others also, same with Rao, Bhat, Sharma etc

Chethan Rao   4:38 PM
May be all of them were same and then they split somewhere

Me:
Hmmm.. Yes. Our WBF World Brahman Federation, organization Founder President Shree Nirmal Choubey, a friend of mine, once told me Sharma is like the "generic" braahmaNa surname, .. his "Choubey" actually means Chaturvedi it seems .. so, Yes, it is a good point you made.

Chethan Rao   4:44 PM
👍

Me:
In mantras, often the priest says my name like "thirumalaraya sharmaNaha", although there is formally no "Sharma" in my name, adding it to complete the name, as if like avaru or Sir we can say. I noticed this back in my young years in India.
