Good morning, Raya. I'm sorry I haven't replied to your messages lately. Last weekend, I received an invitation from a brand to a business dinner, but I was on vacation with my friends at the time. Because of the rushed schedule, I had my assistant bring my dress, and then we drove from Seattle to San Francisco, where we're still here.

It sounds like it's already snowing heavily in the eastern cities. Be careful to keep warm and avoid catching a cold, my friend. I think bad weather is probably the best excuse to stay home, but if possible, going out for a snowball fight and building a snowman is also a great idea.
I hope everything goes well for you lately! Enjoy it!

You
Jan 20, 2:11 PM

Good thanks! Yes, staying warm indoors, last two days & nights, mostly teen degrees outside but getting warmer by the bright sun now. Altogether over last few days we had more than a foot of snow at our place, I think. roads now seem to be drivable, we paid someone to clear snow from driveway, cars, sidewalk. and, I have an interesting story from University of Rochester that I wanted to mention, son of China's former leader Deng Xiaping, it seems he studied there in Physics Department, and was in the same office and chair that I had there previously, and it was his afterwards. This was mentioned to me back then, in 1980, by my friends (junior to me) still there. (Oh, Well, Very Interesting !!!, I remember it, and wanted to tell you !)

Sunflower
Jan 20, 2:53 PM

Hearing you say that, I can really feel how cold the weather has been these past few days. Thankfully, the sun is out now, and the situation is slowly improving. Having someone clear the snow was a wise decision; it's safe and saves trouble.

Your experience at the University of Rochester was also very interesting. The coincidences in the details of history are truly remarkable. To have any connection with such a background is special in itself. Did this fascinating experience help you in your later work in politics?

I understand your amazement at these historical coincidences, and I appreciate your sharing.

You
Jan 20, 3:14 PM

No, it has actually NO relevance for any of my interests, work or activities. Also, I never met the person, or paid much attention to it, since of course, someone, another student perhaps, was going to be in that office and chair, after I left. I just mentioned it here as an anecdote, and, although it was not something that would be in my mind or thinking, I did remember it, and, LOOKING BACK, after all the happenings over the years, I was actually wondering about the possibility that it may have some significance, in the context of the various happenings, our personal as well as worldwide, China-USA-India included. Of course, it does not change or affect anything for me or for anybody, at this time.

Sunflower
Jan 20, 3:21 PM

I understand what you mean. Some things are just casual anecdotes at the time, but later, when we look back on personal experiences and broader world events, because time has been stretched and we've accumulated more experience, we put them into a larger context for reflection. Even if this doesn't have any impact on our present lives, the act of looking back and reflecting itself has its own significance.

It's always satisfying to fill up your fridge at home! I hope you're keeping warm in this cold weather. If I were there, I might choose to build a snowman with you, lol. I used to be a pro at making snowmen when I was a kid!
Nothing special, just last night I dreamed that you and I fell into a food world!

Jan 23, 1:29 PM

Oh, that's so sweet of you, and, Hmmm.. that will be fun, of course, building snowman etc., and food world with you. Yes, I am keeping warm, nothing to worry. Temp in the house is much warmer these days, than in previous years, years ago, when only I was at home during the day, wife & sons were out at work or in school etc, so I used to keep the temp much lower, programmed to go up before they returned, saving money that way, which was very important to do for us then, especially in 1990s. but i did that even later, until Covid lockdown time, then my wife started working from home, and we kept the temp higher.

Enjoying this beautiful moment with you is undoubtedly the happiest time. Many years ago, everyone's family was more frugal. If you weren't wealthy, you would live like you were in an economic depression every day. But I'm glad that times have changed. However, I recently saw in the news that many people are still facing this situation. Some people are taking out their 401k to pay their bills in advance, and some are even taking out loans. You can clearly feel that $100 can buy much less than before.

This is the news we discussed before about Deng Xiaoping's son, who shared an office with you, going to study in the United States. At the time, this news had a significant impact on China.

You
Feb 1, 9:02 PM

Oh! Very interesting! In what way significant impact on China ??

Sunflower
Feb 1, 9:11 PM

I remember that some Chinese people protested at the time. In fact, at that time, Chinese people had a great fondness for going abroad, but for those who were more involved in national politics, it was a kind of betrayal, so it caused a lot of dissatisfaction.

Feb 1, 9:16 PM

Oh, I see, Very interesting!, (it was similar in India also, especially then, but now changed a bit, I think)

Sunflower
Feb 1, 9:24 PM

Yes, this has happened in many developing countries in the past, but now that people know their ideals and what they want, they themselves have changed and are gradually turning to live and work in countries with more opportunities.

You
Feb 1, 9:35 PM

Yes, I agree!

Sunflower
Feb 1, 9:36 PM

I'm glad you agree with this viewpoint. At that time, many countries primarily relied on agriculture and handicrafts for development. Consequently, many people chose to be complacent rather than strive for improvement, which is one reason why labor costs became low in many countries.

Deng's Son Is Coming to Rochester For Graduate Training in Physics; Officials Appear Surprised Semester Began Monday Share full article
By Fox Butterfield Special To the New York Times Jan. 18, 1980

PEKING, Jan. 17 - A son of the senior Deputy Prime Minister, Deng Xiaoping, is scheduled to leave for the United States next week to enroll as a graduate student at the University of Rochester, according to a source familiar with the family. The son, Deng Chifang, a physicist at Peking University, is described by Chi- nese friends as a brilliant, self-effacing man in his mid-30s. His father, generally regarded as the most influential Chinese leader, has taken a special interest in improving capabilities in science and technology. The son was expected to arrive Monday for the start of the new semester, but he evidentally delayed his trip to take part in an international conference here on the physics of small particles, his specialty.

Officials Appear Surprised

An embassy spokesman said he could neither confirm nor deny that the younger Mr. Deng had been given per- mission to go to the United States; other American officials appeared surprised when told about Mr. Deng's family rela- tionship. The source familiar with the family said Deng Chifang did not use his father's name when he applied for a visa to avoid publicity and any implication that he had gotten his visas through his father's influ- ence. The special privileges enjoyed by Communist Party officials in housing, food, employment and travel abroad have become a major issue in recent months. A Harvard professor who visted Peking was startled when asked by Chi- nese leaders to help get their children into school in Cambridge. It is estimated that a thousand Chinese scientists, exchange scholars and stu- dents have gone to the United States over the year since the normalization of rela- tions between Washington and Peking. About half have been sponsored privately by relatives in America under a new di- rective allowing Chinese to travel abroad if their way is paid by people overseas. The others have gone on Government sti- pends. In a related development the New China News Agency said that Chinese students in the United States were enjoy- ing great academic success. Zhou Ningli, a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, received the highest mark in a chemistry examination in a class of 250 students, the press agency said, quoting the Chancellor, Dr. Irving Shain. At Co- lumbia University Chinese students took four of the top five places in a course on electrodynamics, the agency said.

Semester Began Monday

ROCHESTER, Jan. 17 - A spokesman for the University of Rochester said that Deng Chifang had been accepted as a graduate student in physics and was ex- pected when the semester began Mon- day. University officials said they did not know where he was or why he had failed to arrive.
