my Interaction with Bristol Myers Squibb Virtual Assistant Ripley on 2026 April 11, and more, see below.

some highlighted titbits: 

in the old photo here, from 1981 summer time, July or August I think, we see my wife Usha standing at the Squibb Corporation pharmaceuticals company campus. building and lake there, in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, .. She had worked there as an accounting assistant in corporate accounting area, for about 4 to 6 months, before resigning suddenly, 

One day (in 1980 December) when I got back from work (Rutgers Physics postdoc), she announced that she had resigned (i knew she was not happy with the job), that she was flying to India the nest day to be in time for my sister's wedding, and had already made the Air India flight reservation & ticket arrangement with travel agent on the phone, so that was quite unexpected or shocking for me at the time, but I respected her choices, and decision. She worked there at Squibb as an outside consultant company employee, it was hourly low pay part-time job no-benefits status, like 37.5 hrs per week, $9 or so per hour, I do not remember the exact figures, whatever was the then standard for such work, we can say). 

She worked there for about five months or so, in 1980, starting perhaps in August or September, and finally she ended that job there resigning in December 1980 and leaving for India, good reason or excuse of attending my sister Usha Kiran’s wedding was also there, and visiting parents and family, of course. It was not a suitable position for her qualifications and abilities, pay was also very low, and she had to commute, drive a bit and then take vanpool.  

Although she had a BA in Statistics and MBA  in Finance, Applied Economics, Corporate Accounting from University of Rochester, Rochester NY, graduating in May 1980, and with student practical training visa for six months, it was very tough to get a good position. Her one important interview for a financial dream job in a big good company to work for at that time (Merrill Lynch ? Or some other?) did not result in a job offer. She had driven by herself to Long Island or Queens area in New York from Highland Park in New Jersey where we lived, as I did not want to or had refused to take an extra day off from work to come along to help, and she was not happy about it, was perhaps upset, and may have affected the interview negatively, such possibility is there. 

In those years, I also faced visa problems, much delay for visa renewal (?), or transfer (?) from F-1 Practical Training to H-1 was there, at my Rutgers University postdoc position. and so the extension for approval to work and stay in the country came a few months after the expiration date of the earlier one, although the application had been filed correctly on time.  

And finally when my H-1 visa was done and she returned in summer 1981 on H-4 dependent visa, and before we moved to our new jobs, faculty at SUNY College, Fredonia NY, one day, we drove to the Squibb campus and this photo is from that occasion.

And this INS visa delay for me while at Rutgers would, later in 1982 when our green cards application was made, enable INS to claim (unfairly) that I had worked illegally, when I was with no legal status, and an order for our deportation was also issued, requiring us to appeal it then, with advice from friends and help of a lawyer, and later we had to go abroad, to the US Consulate in Madras for the green card, where it was approved.

Although in severe shock and great stress, we have faced the challenges and moved forward crossing the barriers biases impediments etc that came before us, it was tough, not easy, for my wife and sons and the others also I brought up my two sons Kaviraj and Shilpi as future presidents of usa, with that attitude/ outlook/ mindset, supporting and encouraging the leadership nature already in them. They are born in usa, grew up in usa and consider themselves as Americans. The country, the people and the whole world including India where we parents are originally from will need their leadership and contributions to go forward towards better future vision in true spirit of America. It is the nature of truth, nature of nature, nature of humanity.
