Yes, Thank You. You are welcome. dhanyavaada. By the way, I had started teaching Kannada writing, alphabets, words etc. to our sons Kavi and Shilpi. when they were like 6 and 4 years old, both together, Before stopping my efforts, (mainly due to my lack of time, various other factors affecting me and the stresses from them, so less motivations, etc), I was able to teach them how to write their names in Kannada, and then I called it the end of my efforts. A few years later, in our weekly shloka class, our friends Soma Murthy & Parvathi, taught some Kannada for a short time, maybe about four or more or so sessions, held in their house, which our sons also attended. My sister Usha Kiran in India had given me some Kannada school textbooks, elementary as well as higher, and I had also bought some other small books in bookstores suitable for learning.

And, a few years ago, when we went to see him in Portland OR, I had requested Shilpito write his name in Kannada script, and he did remember it, and this is photo of what he wrote, on a notepad paper I had from Shutterfly.com showing him at different ages, as hewas growing up, various phot extraxts.

I see Haliyala taluk there in this Uttara Kannada map, interesting (for me). I have a very good friend, name Arvind Halliyal, classmate from MSc at IIT Madras, He was from Bangalore, their family settled there, I think. I did not know (or forgotten) where his native origin place was, so, this may be the answer. His help was very important for me, especially when he recommended me for a research summer job with his Prof L E Cross at Materials Research Lab, Penn State University, State College, PA. And they offered me Visiting Assistant Professor position, and I was able to do some good theoretical research work there in Ferroelectrics, which they much appreciated. It was in summer 1984 and the next winter break in 1984-85 academic year. I wrote good research papers on that work. Prof LE Cross, also Prof Newnham there, recommended me highly, thus ensuring my tenure-track faculty job renewals at SUNY College Fredonia in western New York state. Then, in 1985 Spring semester, I got the job offer from AT&T Bell Labs, (with help from my elder brother working there then), also a one-year leave of absence from my college teaching job was approved, so I joined there in June 1985, after a trip to Mangalore for visiting my father who had unexpectedly suffered a stroke and was in the hospital, recovering and coming home in a few days after we (Kaviraj, Usha and me) arrived there. So Arvind Halliyal had a very important role in my jobs, in my professional growth and career, because my various other efforts, applications, enquiries, were not successful, and it was then that Arvind asked me to apply to his thesis advisor Prof Cross there at MRL at Penn State, and professionally it worked out very well for me as well as for them.

In IIT Madras also, in the Physics Dept, it was my friends Arvind Halliyal, H Udaya Kumar, and A S Bommannavar, who, on their own initiative, decided to talk to the friendly Prof Radhakrishnan and complain to him in support that the faculty there were deliberately discriminating against me, and favoring another classmate Pratap Chandra Patnaik, giving him the best or better grades and first in class, bringing me down in the evaluation of the tests and exam papers, although my answers were correct, and very likely his answers were no better, and my friends knew that I understood the subjects better, explained it better to my classmate friends etc. There is a bit more happenings there regarding this issue, and that all happened in my favor only, and looking back I think it may have to do with this fact that my friends complained to the faculty on my behalf regarding the obvious discrimination. But nothing really changed. I got second rank only, (in every semester there), and Patnaik got the first place in grades and CPA (credit point average) all the time. The professors generally did not grade the questions in a transparent way, generally just gave the overall grade as S (highest), A (next), B, etc for the entire exam answer paper on that subject, so we were not able to question them, and the CPA will be given for the whole semester in the grade sheet, at the end. There was no transparency in the grading, students did not know the marking details or scores, only the overall letter grade and the CPA at the end, so biases were easily hidden and invisible. I attributed the situation to regional discrimination, because of where I came from, like it had happened similarly when I was a B Sc (Hons) Physics student in Bangalore University at St Joseph's College, but there the discrimination was not by the faculty in the college, it was the outside examiners pulling me down on purpose, I had felt, and I still had managed to get First Rank cumulatively, combining all three years.

In early 2000s, or so, when we were in San Jose, California, (visiting and staying with Lavanya & Venkat, very likely), we visited Arvind, Hema & family (son & daughter) at their place in nearby Cupertino for one afternoon and evening, Usha and me with our sons Kavi & Shilpi, The four children were playing together nicely (video games popular then), we enjoyed meeting them, some other friends had also come, we had dinner and came back to Lavanya's place where we were staying for the night I think. Some months or so later, (not sure when exactly), I heard the very sad news that the daughter there had committed suicide hanging in the bathroom. It was totally very shocking. She and her brother both seemed to be happy well-adjusted kids. I consider it very mysterious, suspicious, I think. It happened when the parents were away at work, on her return from school that day I think (typically here, children come back from school in the afternoon, parents from work hours later in the evening). So, within myself, I have wondered about it, that suspicious other agenda type evil forces maybe involved in her elimination, for some secret hidden invisible intelligence type Deep State agendas). And, we have heard in the news, in USA, in India etc, many mysterious, suspicious type happenings, accidents, deaths, suicides, murders etc not well explained, which cannot be expected to come out fully into the open etc. because that is the state of the world we are in !!!! RAAMA. RAAMA.

Looking back, I think, after my classmate friends had complained to Prof Radhakrishnan (son of famous Indian physicist Prof Bhagavantham, also Sai Baba devotee) about the unfair biased treatment I was getting from our physics faculty there at IIT Madras, and very likely as its impact, one of our class professors, teaching Solid State Physics, gave a surprise test in the class (that was very unusual, and only time we had a surprise test in my two years there), and the result was that I received the highest score, everything done correctly (it was all solving problems), and P C Patnaik did very poorly, and so did many of the other students, thus proving our case. I was also invited to attend a film screening introducing Shree Satya Sai Baba at the center in the IIT campus there, which I did along with a classmate or hostel friend perhaps, but I left the matter there, did not join the organization or group. One more thing I remember is that a famous (solid state physics?) professor from Germany was visiting for a few days or a week or so, and I was encouraged to go and meet him in his office room. I was hesitant, as I did not know what to say, and walked by his room a couple of times, other dept people were also in the room. Eventually, next attempt, I collected enough self-courage and went in and said hello, perhaps just introducing myself. That's it, nothing further, and came out. (I was just nervous, we can say, did not know how to handle such meetings).

And, one more important thing also happened. One of the MSc Mathematics students, Tamilian, I knew (he was on our wing of the hostel, almost next to or near another classmate friend of mine, A Ramakrishna), requested me to explain to him one or more chapters from the Classical Mechanics textbook (it is considered as an advanced type class at our then level, so a tough subject, lots of math and physics involved, the textbook was perhaps the one written by Goldstein), So, as he had requested, I sat with him and the textbook, in his room, and we went over together, the material from the chapters that he wanted, which he had trouble with. It went very well, and he understood much better, and thanked me for it, also told others about how well I had done in that tutoring him type effort I did in a tough class subject. I was also happy about it.

After coming to University of Rochester in 1974 August, the next year they (Physics Dept) admitted Kannan Jagannathan from IIT Madras, he was one year junior to me there, I knew who he was, and he knew who I was, he had also written to me, perhaps, before coming to Rochester, we were good close friends while being students there, I had helped him a bit initially when he came there etc, (but later we lost contact after I left from there). A few years later, in 1978-79 perhaps, Uchila N Umesh (his family originally from Udupi region, settled in Bangalore where he grew up), a B Tech graduate from IIT Madras, came and joined the PhD program in the Graduate School of Management, also Saligrama Agnohothri, and they were both good close friend of us. I had mentioned to them my unhappiness about how I was unfairly treated at IIT Madras etc, and Umesh, being well connected to his friends, alumni association etc had perhaps tried to convey to me not to distance myself from it because of it or not to continue to keep bad feelings about it. It may have had some good impact on me, for much later years. I have visited them, donated some books to library etc, many years later, in 2000s and in 2010s, also met and chatted with some faculty in physics, engineering etc,and in administration (Deputy Director, for Academic Affairs, or so), visited Mandakini Hostel also where I had stayed two years, friendly conversations. visits. thirumalaraya's profile picture

Our Quantum Mechanics I & II professor at IIT Madras, for two semesters, was Prof S Swaminathan, he was very different from the rest of the faculty there towards me, considered me as the best student in the class (and the recommendation letter he wrote for me also says that I think), always gave me the highest grade S in all the tests and exams, the other student P C Patnaik, very likely must have received, possibly a lower grade A sometimes (?) etc. He was one of the senior professors there, considered as brilliant, stood out a bit as different in attitudes and personality from the rest or the milieu, also he was not married bachelor, said to be staying with his brother's family, I think. So, Prof Swaminathan was one of my favorite professors there,
