SB 3.8.2 - Potential Patients for the Potential Medicine

so 'haà nåëäà kñulla-sukhäya duùkhaà

mahad gatänäà viramäya tasya

pravartaye bhägavataà puräëaà

yad äha säkñäd bhagavän åñibhyaù

                                 -Srimad Bhagavatam 3.8.2

TRANSLATION

Let me now begin speaking on the Bhägavata Puräëa, which was directly spoken to the great sages by the Personality of Godhead for the benefit of those who are entangled in extreme miseries for the sake of very little pleasure.

The purpose behind speaking this Srimad Bhagavatam is told in this verse. In this regard the words kñulla-sukhäya duùkhaà mahad are very significant which means who are ready to undergo extreme sufferings just for the sake of little pleasure. For example, now a days there are many corporate employees who are working day & night, some are working even 16 hrs a day & also are earning a huge amount of money. They are working so much that they are not getting time to spend that money on them. They are simply feeling satisfied by just seeing their increasing bank balance. So, for the little pleasure, these people are suffering by working so hard.

Another example befitting the context is fulfilling the desires of our mind. Our mind is restless. If one is not properly trained in the science of God, then surely his/her mind is going to trouble him/her a lot. First we hanker & imagine for satisfying the mind’s desire. After fulfilling that desire, our mind craves for more & most of the time we feel too much frustrated after fulfilling that craving.

In the present scenario, everyone falls under any/both of the above two examples. So, we all should take advantage by listening & reading Srimad Bhagavatam as we are the potential patients for this potential medicine.

Another important word is säkñäd bhagavän, which means this Srimad Bhagavatam is spoken by none other than the all merciful Supreme Lord Krishna Himself.
