SB 4.20.32 – The Greatest obstruction to our self-interest

nātaḥ parataro loke

puṁsaḥ svārtha-vyatikramaḥ

yad-adhy anyasya preyastvam

ātmanaḥ sva-vyatikramāt

-Srimad Bhagavatam 4.20.32

Translation:

There is no stronger obstruction to one’s self-interest than thinking other subject matters to be more pleasing than one’s self-realization.

The greatest obstruction to our self-interest is being talked about in this verse. While attempting to do good to ourselves, we may find so many different obstructions like bad health, lack of money, lack of friends, lack of speaking skills, lack of good academics, etc. All these hurdles may be creating some retardation but in this verse, the original hurdle of which the above mentioned are sub-branches is being pointed out by Sanat Kumar, son of Lord Brahma & a pure devotee of Krishna.

He is saying that if we consider watching movies, doing gossips, etc to be more pleasing than the topics on self-realization, then this thought of ours is the greatest obstruction to ourselves only in terms of Absolute sense.

Therefore, we should give at least 10-15 minutes daily to think about the upliftment of our soul from the current miserable situation. And the best way to think is to engage ourself in reading scriptures like Srimad Bhagavatam & Bhagavad Gita or listening Krishna Conscious discourses
