SB 02.02.34 – Repetition & Scrutinization, both are important in studying Scriptures.
bhagavän brahma kärtsnyena
trir anvékñya manéñayä
tad adhyavasyat küöa-stho
ratir ätman yato bhavet
-Srimad Bhagavatam 2.2.34
TRANSLATION
The great personality Brahmä, with great attention and concentration of the mind, studied the Vedas three times, and after scrutinizingly examining them, he ascertained that attraction for the Supreme Personality of Godhead Çré Kåñëa is the highest perfection of religion.
In this verse, two words are very important- trir & anvékñya. Trir means 3 times and anviksya means scrutinizingly. Brahma ji, the secondary creator of this world had to study the Vedas not once or twice but for three times to understand them. That too, it was not a casual reading of Vedas, rather it was a scrutinizingly(anvékñya) study of Vedas. This points to a very important lesson.
We come across many people who say that they have read whole Bhagavad Gita. But from this verse, we can understand that completing just a reading of any scripture does not make us eligible for understanding the spiritual science, rather it is a thorough & scrutinizing & repeated study of scriptures that helps us to enter into transcendental spiritual realm.
And after studying (not reading) Vedas, Brahma Ji gives us the conclusion that approaching Krishna is the highest perfection of one’s life. So, we should try to follow in the footsteps of Brahma Ji by approaching Krishna through chanting His holy names & trying to follow His words.
