I enjoyed the TED video presented by Richard St. John about the eight secrets to success. Just as a reminder, the eight secrets are: passion, work, focus, persist, ideas, good, push, and serve. The talk is inspiring to me because I already practice/believe in most of those qualities. Over the course of my time here, I plan on implementing/improving the ones that I don't have a good handle on; such as ideas and focus. I sometimes have a hard time focusing on one thing at a time, and therefore can get overwhelmed by what is going on around me. If I continue to do that, I will lose focus and get lose sight of the bigger picture (my goals). As for ideas, I tend to stay "inside the box", it is hard for me to come up with something new when it's easier and more comforting to do something that already works and that I trust.
To me, the most important thing about being successful is happiness. If you aren't happy doing something, then don't do it. In other words don't just do it for the money or benefit packaged.(In the video this is passion.) As you can tell, money is the last thing I use to measure success. I never really grew up around a lot of money, so I was brought up to appreciate what I had. This is still something I still believe in today, as an adult.
I think Richard named some very important things to succeed. Some other characteristics that I think are important to success are: confidence (have faith in yourself), goal setting (how will you know you if you are successful, knowledge (not just your educational background, but recognizing when you have done wrong, and learning from it), and finally, enthusiasm and optimism.
