What elements do you think are critical to being successful outside of the 8 ones from the video?

I enjoyed the TED video presented by Richard St. John about the eight secrets to success. Just as a reminder, the eight secrets are: passion, work, focus, persist, ideas, good, push, and serve. The talk is inspiring to me because I already practice/believe in most of those qualities. Over the course of my time here, I plan on implementing/improving the ones that I don't have a good handle on; such as ideas and focus. I sometimes have a hard time focusing on one thing at a time, and therefore can get overwhelmed by what is going on around me. If I continue to do that, I will lose focus and get lose sight of the bigger picture (my goals). As for ideas, I tend to stay "inside the box", it is hard for me to come up with something new when it's easier and more comforting to do something that already works and that I trust.

To me, the most important thing about being successful is happiness. If you aren't happy doing something, then don't do it.  In other words don't just do it for the money or benefit packaged.(In the video this is passion.) As you can tell, money is the last thing I use to measure success. I never really grew up around a lot of money, so I was brought up to appreciate what I had. This is still something I still believe in today, as an adult.

I think Richard named some very important things to succeed. Some other characteristics that I think are important to success are: confidence (have faith in yourself), goal setting (how will you know you if you are successful, knowledge (not just your educational background, but recognizing when you have done wrong, and learning from it), and finally, enthusiasm and optimism.

From the TED video we watched on Monday, Mr. Richard St. John shared
his 8 secrets which lead to success. They all essential for people
from all walks of life who are desire to be successful. Out of these 8
secrets, I think self-discipline is also important to help people
achieve success since though people have ideas or passion about their
careers, sometimes, they may be distracted by some other things or be
lazy. They spend too much time on doing unnecessary things rather than
focusing on the work they need to do. In this case, people need to be
self-discipline and learn how to manage time effectively and always
keep in mind what are their major tasks need to be accomplished.

I think they the video covered a lot in those 8 areas. Most of my
ideas parallel them too close to be considered a different idea. But
here are a few which come to mind: luck and networking. Success isn’t
easy as far as I know, you have to give it as much effort as you can.

Success is never a matter of luck. Those who find success are
committed to their ideas, and fight endlessly with a purpose. So, in
my opinion, that's the main ingredient to reaching higher grounds:
believing in your goals and dedicating yourself fully to acheive them
no matter what. A great support system, and a strong internal drive
will get you to the top.

Hello Leisy,

I like to say "ha ha", because your optimism is huge and very motivational; I am feeling getting contagious about it. However, I wish that a great system, and a strong internal drive would only lead to success. As you know, I personally believe in personal responsibility, conscientiousness, and persistence in order to achieve goals, but also I do add a combination of little luck to that.

Once my dad taught me: "Luck is to be ready for when the opportunity
shows-up" ...just think about it Papa

Hello Diego,

I appreciate your feedback, and you know what, your dad is absolutely right. I think that success is a combination of many factors that go from self-motivation, personal responsibility, conscientiousness, persistence, and so on; and luck is the "n" factor that will make it much more easier to achieve.
