Travel to Chemnitz from the UK isn't straightforward.  I've been doing some research on options. If anyone would like a copy of the notes that I've made, just email me direct.  It might give you a 20 or 30 minute headstart...

Hello James,
I was also looking into those and still hasn't really checked much.
If you could share your journey details they might be useful for me as well.
All best,
Ilaria

I initially thought the Eurostar to Brussels and then a train to Germany would be fine, but it isn't that good a journey; a flight to Berlin and train from there seems better, but I'd be interested in seeing James's notes too.

Hello.

It seems quite complicated to go from Paris to Chemnitz too.
I thought of a flight to Dresden — a well-known tourist desination — but even Lufthansa is unable to offer direct flights...
There is a connection at Frankfurt airport to another plane. It takes at least 4 hours (and sometimes up to 6 hours)…
Of course it is pretty expensive.
Then I hope there are trains from Dresden to Chemnitz.

A train trip from Paris to Chemnitz, with many connections, would take 8 hours. And due to poor train service in Germany, it is not something that I would do.
I hadn't realised that Chemnitz was so uneasy to reach from France.

Cheers.

Thierry

Dresden/Leipzig both expensive and involve 2 flights adding a lot of time.  Berlin and Prague have direct flights and are cheaper but then you are reliant on a lengthy train trip. Most from Berlin involve 3 changes which put me off even though, overall, it's probably the quickest option from the UK. I've ended flying to Prague. It may be a bit longer but is probably the cheapest option. I can drive to Stansted airport, if I miss a train there are plenty of others, and the trip has just 1 change at Dresden.  But I'm nervous of Thierry's comments about poor train service!  I've sent my detailed notes to Ilaria, Eddie and Rick.

Trains in Germany are famed, true, mostly because people in Germany are appalled by ineficiency. In my experience they are as reliable as the UK services and much more transparent on ticketing and route options (it's a single operator!). It is slightly easier to reach than Tampere from what I've seen (more options).
Personally considering Frankfurt or Prague then trains.

I travel quite a bit by train in Germany since moving to Berlin last summer and rarely have any trouble. Trains from Berlin to Chemnitz take 3 hours and only require a single transfer in Leipzig if you book through Deutsche Bahn (https://int.bahn.de/en/).

Best,
Jacob

We’ve found flying to Frankfurt and taking the train from there looks much cheaper/more efficient than going via Berlin - although I hadn’t looked at Prague as a waypoint.

We’re planning to head from Chemnitz to Graz for the Foundations of Digital Games conference the following week - any tips would be appreciated. It looks like the best way to do that trip is by train via Prague. Then it’s a question of whether we can get reasonable flights back from Vienna (or even Graz) or whether that’s another Frankfurt detour.

For those grappling with the logistics of travelling from London/SE UK to Chemnitz, and who may also have seen James's helpful notes on possible routes, I can add the following:

There is a BA flight departing London City Airport at 14:00 Monday 07 April, direct to Berlin, arriving 16:45.

From there, a direct train to Chemnitz (IC 2271) departs Berlin Flughafen at 17:01, arriving Chemnitz Hbf at 19:31. The fare is €31.99.

While it might be tight getting from plane to train in 15 minutes (especially with hold luggage or a non-EU passport) there are later trains to Chemnitz, some with one or more changes, and higher fares, but I am hoping to make it onto the 17:01 with just a cabin bag!

The BA flight is a bit more expensive than other flights — it's double the Ryanair fare, for example — but a 14:00 take-off from LCY may be a bit more relaxed than travelling to Stansted, Luton, or Gatwick, for an earlier, albeit cheaper, flight.

Delegates leaving Chemnitz by train may be interested to know that a German DB Railcard, BahnCard 25, costing €19.90 and valid for 3 months, gives a 25% discount on railfares — if the standard railfare for your journey will be more than €80, the BahnCard will pay for itself and save you money too.

You must remember to cancel the BahnCard so it doesn't renew.

Happy homeward travel, everyone!
