Are the netrunner boxes of 6 double decks all the same? Or are the
cards random?

The cards are random. Although your rare-uncommon-common ratio is worse
than in booster packs, the decks are balanced so that Corporations have
enough ICE cards, Runners have sufficient programs to circumvent all
types of ICE, etc...

Are there any balance issues in the basic game I should be aware of
before I take on my nine-year old? I don't want to crush him (or be
crushed) and I think I remember reading that maybe the corporation is
slightly overpowered.

The game is definitley more difficult for the runner. BUt I feel the
game as resonably good blance between runner and Corportation if *IF*
the decks are built properly. There are several cards that allow the
runner to rifle through thier decks and discard piles and retrieve
specific cards. Without these the runner can easily be sunk with
impenatrable ICE and a corp finishing off agenda after agenda.

Random Deck vs. Random Deck - Edge to the corporation
Constructed - even.

Don't!

Seriously, I think this game plays best sealed. I haven't played in
years, but when I did I felt that the sealed deck play was very
balanced, while constructed came down to certain overpowered cards.

Is NetRunner really that popular? (I'd check BGG... but umm....)
Perhaps I should be looking at selling mine, rather than letting it
collect dust (just 2 of those dualdeck box things).

I've looked at selling my set a few times over the years. It's never
seemed worth the price you could get. I'd rather own them, and be able
to play the game.

I liked the game, but I think it was mostly theme and an "easy" Magic
for me.

The sad thing is, I don't believe I've ever played them. I bought them
back when it was a new game, and apparently looked through them
(shrink-wrap is gone), but that's it. I forgot I even had them, until I
read this thread. Sounds like I'll need to investigate the trade/sell
thing on BGG when it's back up, or at least I think there was a
trade/sell thing there. :)

Sealed play has been likened to Chess on numerous occassions by several
people. In sealed the game is usually pretty balanced, however the
learning curve for the runner is a bit higher so the game will skew
more in the Corporation's favor until the playing ability is improved.
Unfortunately, the Proteus expansion really swung things a bit more in
the Runner's favor by allowing them to conceal some powerful resource
cards (including one which allows them to trash data in a data fort
before the accessed cards take effect... all this without any penalty
to the Runner... Or how about that new shield program that allows the
runner to prevent any amount of Net or Brain damage if they have the
bits to pay for the protection?), some pretty lethal viruses, and the
abiility to give the Corporation Bad Publicity (akin to M:tG's poison
counters).

The game has languished for a quite some time, but there's still a core
of dedicated people who would very much like to see the game live on.
We're currently organizing some online play through MagicWorkstation,
hopefully working up to getting a league and/or tournament started
soon.

If anyone is interested in playing, I highly suggest you check out the
following:

Netrunner Central: http://www.arasaka.de (very informative site, with
lots of strategy articles and some good links)
Runner's Net: http://www.runners-net.com (Where most of the activity is
going on for playing online with MWS. All the information for playing
online can be pretty much found here, along with a forum to talk to
other players with)
