Could all the new game entries which are actually existing games (Game of Thrones 2nd edition, Descent 2nd edition, Puerto Rico Anniversary Edition) causing BGG to go down frequently?

It's always a contentious subject whether new editions should be given a new game entry in the database.  Most users say no.  That doesn't stop the admins from continuously letting in new editions as new games.  Perhaps it gives BGG bragging rights (70,,000 games!) but I wonder whether it is taxing the database.

Sure, maybe we should give the little db a break and not add any more
game entries PERIOD... Poor thing has too much stuff to slog around as
it is...

Maybe we should delete the forums too, all those posts and threads
make the db even bigger than necessary...

Heck just turn it into a read-only db! That will take the stress right
out of it!

Well, take Descent 2nd edition.
After all info we now have, it is quite the different game and putting it under the same name would be pretty confusing, right?

At a small scale (thousands), a database should be able to handle one more.

At a large scale (millions, billions), what's one more to the database?

If an edition of a game is significantly different, it should have its own entry in the database. We own two copies of Acquire, a 1962 and a 1999. Anyone can see, if they look, that the games are radically different even though they are the "same game". There's a case where I really wish the editions WERE separated, but they are not.

A reprint is not an edition. A rules-typo change (in my mind) is not an edition either even if it's called one. Big changes in boards, pieces, packaging, ARE editions.

Of course, my opinion's worth about as much as the electrons I had to sling to get this to you...

The database has a way to deal with new editions by putting them under the same game name.  Simply put a rule needs to be established when a game is a new entry or not.  If the words "Box" "Edition" or "Set" appear then it should appear as the same game as the original game.

On BGG, the only consistency in this sort of thing is the
inconsistency. Unfortunately.

Some of us have been advocating formalizing (and publishing!) policies
and procedures for this sort of thing (among other areas) for years,
rather than continuing to run things seat-of-the-pants,
tribal-knowledge, I-know-it-when-I-see-it stylee.

We've been met with a resounding silence, or, occasionally, derision
from those with a vested interest in protecting their fiefdom/"power".

I've pretty much given up on this sort of thing; they are way too far
down the path they are on, and the people who could effect change
have very little interest in improving processes/outcomes if it
infringes on what they see as their prerogatives.

So, every so often, I'll pipe up in discussions like this, but it's
pretty much just tilting at windmills. :/

Some 2nd editions are just reprints, some are the original game with minor modifications, some are redesigns. I know of at least one game that has the same title but is not compatible with the original.
