Does anyone have a time frame for when BGG will be up again?

I suppose not.

Didn't you hear? The senate passed that wicked restrictive E-trade
bill (I forgot what it's called). BGG's off the air indefinitely. They
plan to relaunch as a subscriber only retail site. I thought everyone
knew already...

ONCE they'd administered & ingested "the little BLUE pill", THEN shall
BGG gain "uppage", unless the "pool water" was much too cold. Dammit
Derk! We told you before NOT to put these within your ear or nose, as
it then made you: "harder of hearing"; along with "blowing your
nose"!

Whatever timje frame people have, it's wrong.

Take however long BGG *should* be down. Double it and add 2.5 hours.

BGG should NEVER be down, therefore it should have only been 2.5
hours. We are well past that at this point.

Next!

It'll be a while. I wouldn't wait up. My understanding is that they
are about halfway done, but even once they are done with the hardware
upgrades, it will be a while before the site is back up.

BGG goes down for scheduled maintenance all the time.
Last time they said it would be an hour for server maintenance.
It came back up about 5 hours later.

Same question here. It's been down for almost 5 hours now.
Any explanation for the downtime? I work with webdevelopment, and
regular maintenance rarely takes more than an hour, in my experience.

Crossposted from the other thread:

"We're performing hardware upgrades on Friday and Saturday throughout
the day and night. Please expect intermittent downtime as we switch
out old servers for new ones, replace hard drives, and migrate
databases."

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/785357/hardware-upgrades-friday-saturday

So basically, write off BGG for the next 36 hours

Intermittent downtime doesn't exactly describe what we're seeing here :-(

BGG runs on a shoestring budget, and can't afford the sort of hardware
that would allow for continuous service during maintenance.

Today there are several things going on. First, one of our MongoDB
(database) servers, sackson, is being replaced with a new system. The
goal was to transfer the database to the new server AND pull the old
system from the rack on the same trip. (BGG has only one rack of
servers, and it is full--any time we install a new server, we have to
remove an old one.) In order to do so, we needed to make a full backup
of the database while the site is down--if it were up, we would be
constantly writing to the database. That full backup alone takes a
long time--a couple of hours, I believe. So we shut down the system
and started the backup before Aldie headed to the server room.

Another reason for the trip was that one of the hard drives had failed
on our main file server. In order to replace that, we again made a
full backup before shutting it down. That backup took longer than
expected.

An additional purpose of the trip was to increase the hard drive
capacity in three of our systems. This meant swapping out about 20
hard drives, and this also apparently did not go as smoothly as we
would like.

Finally, two additional servers were installed.

As you can see, there was a lot going on in this maintenance trip. If
we could afford to pay someone to be in charge of our hardware, and if
we could afford more redundancy in our servers, we could certainly do
our maintenance with less downtime. Considering our resources,
though, I think we do OK.

1. What kind of monetary donation would you require to upgrade to
hardware which would allow this? Or at least allow it to remain up
without maintenance so frequently?

2. Where/How can donations even be made?

3. There better be no April Fools downtime because there was some just
the other night and now looking like all today and tomorrow. Downtime
on April Fools just to have downtime/play a prank would seem a little
excessive and cruel at this point.

Wow! That's a big work load! Ever thought to run a fund-drive to help get to the levels of lower maintenance/no maintenance time on your servers?

We all try to donate when we can afford to but I'm sure if you ran a concerted fund raiser it would do very well! Even with no gain to your forum users aside from a smoother-running site - though everyone likes a Microbadge for their efforts *wink wink*

Just a thought, I'm sure it's crossed your minds previously anyways.

JS52785 there are ways to donate found on BGG already. I know it's a little tricky to find on the site (there's no big "Donate Here" button on the main site) but you can donate already. It's how alot of users have Patron Badges. In fact that's the easiest way to find the donate page; search Patron Badges and you should get to it pretty quickly. Site obviously isn't up now to give you a direct link. If you donate $15 or more you get that year's patron badge. Still never been sure if that is in one donation or retroactively over a 12 month period. Also for every dollar you donate you'll receive 1 Geek Gold :)

I can't find the link right now (obviously) but it's not hard to find.

You could have put their Pay-Pal LINK within here for them others and
maybe offer these TWICE the "GG"s on their RETURN once BGG were such &
up & running some more? GIVE them an incentive at that at least!

I personally think this has EVERYTHING to do with BGG's annual April Fools joke.  They will post some message to the effect that they are now a subscriber's only site due to their supposed shoestring budget (which I never believed anyway, btw - to put this much work into something shoestring would be complete insanity).  I'm just waiting for the other shoe (i.e. joke) to drop.

"Can't afford?" This is a website with 10s of millions of page views
every month and some 75-100,000 unique visitors a day, according to
quantcast. Not trying to start a grumblefest here, but I think it
might be time to bite the bullet and make those necessary upgrades.
The other highly-trafficked websites somehow do it.

longer as a result.
