I'm still working on some backup systems - things taking longer than
expected as usual.

Thanks for being patient.

Ditto, but I am getting good advice, in this "scrunched format" meaning not 10,000 topics to go through, addicts are sent here... LoL

Scott, is a shortage of donations the bottleneck that leads to BGG being down so often?

Please note I am NOT complaining and this is an earnest inquiry.

BGG is an unbelievably rich free resource that I'd be immensely appreciative of
even if it had 10x more downtime.

I'm just wondering because I've been active in a number of other online communities
over the years both bigger and smaller and BGG seems to spend more
time offline than any of the others.

Of course it's still only a tiny fraction of the time and not an enormous
inconvenience at all, I'm just curious as to why it seems to
be a bigger issue here than elsewhere.

Oh I'm sure we could get the downtime "lower" with more money... I
won't turn it down :) http://boardgamegeek.com/support

On April 1st, we added 5 new servers to the rack (which was a disaster
- 2 full days of downtime as I recall), and last weekend we added 4
more (down for about 5 hours).
Tonight was needed (5 hours) because I was migrating over some older
VMs to the new machines - I don't know of anyway to do that without
taking down the site. Maybe toss another 10 random hours here and
there...

That's about 68 hours of downtime in 7 months - approximately 98.6% uptime.

Obviously I would love to avoid it completely, but we have a lot more
moving parts than many websites out there and we do it with a limited
budget and one IT person (me).
We aren't a static webpage/forums site. Every single thing is
dynamically generated and cached out. I'll diagram out what kind of
things we use to run the site at some point to show people how things
work here.

If it wasn't for that disaster in April - we'd have nearly 99.6%
uptime... just to put it in perspective.

Sorry for the inconvenience. Have fun on the site now! It's back up.
