Chapter 2: Contents of the Gita Summarized
Verse: 52 yada te moha-kalilam
buddhir vyatitarishyati
tada gantasi nirvedam
srotavyasya srutasya ca
Translation: When your intelligence has passed out of the dense forest of delusion, you shall become indifferent to all that has been heard and all that is to be heard.
Explanation: In these two verses (2.52-53) Krishna encourages Arjuna to become indifferent to the karma-kanda (fruitive activities) part of the Vedas and focus on the higher path of God realization.
A dense forest is difficult to navigate because there is insufficient light and many distractions. One gets easily lost and distracted in the forest. Such are the karma-kanda potion of the Vedas. They are there to lead one to God consciousness by the gradual process of purification. But the details of karma kanda are very difficult to follow and one can easily get mired into Vikarma. The Vedic history is full of examples of great personalities attempting to follow the path of karma kanda and getting bewildered. One such example given in the Bhagavatam is that of Maharaja Nrgi, who gave extraordinary wealth in charity as recommended in the karma kanda. However due to an inadvertent mistake in the way he gave charity, he was forced to spend a very long time in the body of a lizard. One the other hand great personalities like Sukhadeva Goswami, Maharaja Rshabadeva who were completely engrossed in devotional service, completely neglected the rules of regulations of karma-kanda but were still able to perfect their lives and return back to Godhead.
