Chapter 18: Conclusion -- The Perfection of Renunciation
Verse: 58
mac-cittah sarva-durgani
mat-prasadat tarishyasi
atha cet tvam ahankaran
na sroshyasi vinankshyasi

Translation:
If you become conscious of Me, you will pass over all the obstacles of conditioned life by My grace. If, however, you do not work in such consciousness but act through false ego, not hearing Me, you will be lost.

Explanation:
Krishna now gives the alternatives to Arjuna. What happens if he follows His instructions and what happens if he does not.

When one surrenders to Krishna then by the mercy of Krishna he passes over all the obstacles of material life, including the biggest obstacles of birth, death, disease and old-age. If one chooses not to surrender to Krishna then he will be controlled by his false ego which is under the control of the material energy. Krishna is thus explaining that a living entity is by nature controlled. Either by material or by spiritual potency of the Lord. However it can chooses by which potency it would like to be controlled with.
