SKyPAC gets one of state's largest grants
By ROBYN L. MINOR The Daily News rmi...@bgdailynews.com 783-3249 | Posted: Wednesday, July 17, 2013 12:03 pm
Four Warren County arts organizations will share $1.8 million in Kentucky Arts Partnership grants from the Kentucky Arts Council.
At $80,131, the grant to the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center is one of the largest in the state. Only Actors Theatre of Louisville and the Louisville Orchestra received more – $107,957 and $103,921, respectively.
The money will be used for general operating funds for programs that aren’t supported by ticket sales, such as the art galleries, education programs, youth theater, summer camps and other activities, according to Faith Holley, SKyPAC development manager and author of the grant.
“We are honored to receive this grant, which validates the good work that we are doing in this community,” Holley said.
It is the first time SKyPAC has received the grant.
“Organizations had to be in operation for at least a year before they could apply,” she said. “It is something that we can continue to apply for.”
Emily Moses, communications director at the Arts Council, said the grant process is highly competitive.
“It is a very detailed application,” Moses said. “Organizations have to submit a lot of information and that is reviewed by art agency experts from all across the country. It is an open panel, so organizations can sit in on the panels. If the panelists have questions, representatives of an organization can be given a chance to respond to any questions.”
The funding comes from the Kentucky Arts Council’s overall budget, which is supplied by the Kentucky General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts.
“Funding amounts fluctuate from year to year,” Moses said.
Other Warren County organizations receiving funding are Orchestra Kentucky at $27,229, VSA Kentucky at $11,379 and the Public Theatre of Kentucky at $5,653. Simpson County Guild of Artists and Craftsmen received $2,318.
The KAP grant provides support to nonprofit organizations offering year-round arts services and programs directly for the benefit of the public. The competitive grant process funds applicants based on operating revenues, a panel review of applications and funds available for the program.
Organizations that received funding vary in size and are in rural, suburban and urban communities. In fiscal year 2013, the arts council provided 104 organizations with KAP funding, two more than this funding cycle. One organization that had typically received funding was Kentucky Repertory Theatre. Last year it received nearly $20,000, but the theater closed its doors in late February.
“Kentucky is unique among states of our size due to a wide geographic distribution of arts organizations across our counties,” Lori Meadows, arts council executive director, said in a news release. “This shows us that the people of the commonwealth value the arts and want to participate in the arts because they have dedicated themselves to creating a home for the arts to prosper in their own communities. We are glad we can continue to support these efforts.”
