No way you will get it on the plane, John, those days are gone.
You'll have to put it in a bass trunk, and pay extra for it, usually up to $100
per trip. I've attached a spreadsheet that lists many airlines' policies. You
should try to call Delta to get their skinny on flying a bass.
Bass trunks run up to $4,500, and as cheap as $675. See this link for the latter.

With luck you could rent or borrow one.
The stories of bassists' experiences with their bass trunks at airports are many
and gruesome. The baggage handlers to whom you will have to surrender the trunk
are called "goons" for good reason. Twice, I had to physically take the bass out
of one guys' hands for his rough handling.
Other alternative is to ship it, also in a trunk.
