It appears this list has been quiet for awhile so…………………

My family is getting ready to fly to Costa Rica in about two weeks.  We have Calton cases for all of our instruments except……….the BASS.

Do any of you have any experience flying with an upright and what to or not to do.  I do have access to an acoustic electric (borrow from a friend) but, that is not my first choice by any stretch.

I won’t check it with the luggage.  Do I have any chance of getting it on the plane with me?  We are flying with Delta airlines.

Thanks
John

No way you will get it on the plane, John, those days are gone.
You'll have to put it in a bass trunk, and pay extra for it, usually up to $100
per trip. I've attached a spreadsheet that lists many airlines' policies. You
should try to call Delta to get their skinny on flying a bass.

Bass trunks run up to $4,500, and as cheap as $675. See this link for the latter.

With luck you could rent or borrow one.

The stories of bassists' experiences with their bass trunks at airports are many
and gruesome. The baggage handlers to whom you will have to surrender the trunk
are called "goons" for good reason. Twice, I had to physically take the bass out
of one guys' hands for his rough handling.

Other alternative is to ship it, also in a trunk.

Best of luck,

Hey John,
You're right, this has become a very quiet list.
About your situation, I would never trust my bass with the airline guys.
They just simply don't care if it gets damaged or not.
