I read this article and have heard about this phenomenon for weeks:

In response, these are my thoughts considering the information contained within the link:
In these times, why are there more musicians without a gig if bars are among the primary places musicians get gigs? And furthermore, why should any band take a pay cut due to "hard economic times"?
It seems to be that bars, according to this article, should be relatively recession-resistant, and therefore should not affect hiring and payment for musicians as much as some have experienced or noted.
I know we have lost several jobs to bands willing to work for less. We also did a lot of county and community arts sponsored shows and that program was cut this year.

It does say in the article that "it's clear consumers are going out to eat less and drinking more at home".List-Unsubs Bars that formerly hired bands might cut back to just having bands on weekends, or not at all, as revenues decrease.
