BFRTUC,

The latest logo rendition.  Any additional comments, before Emily’s suggested next steps (engaging fabricator on details, and thinking about different fonts for the log on trail markings (post) vs. paper / website.

Best regards,

Tom

Subject: Stage IV Logo Design

Hello Tom,

Attached is the logo in JPG and EPS format. There is a copy of the logo as a negative and also as a positive. We discussed the logo being a black and white negative drawing but I thought it looked interesting as a positive as well. These are the file types you requested for the final but I would be happy to make further changes. Nothing is set in stone yet (literally).

I have responses for some of the comments from the last feedback. I made the logos thinking that the black areas will be recessed and the gray will be the granite. I tried to keep the detail at the level of the Charles River logo but if any detail is lost I think it will be unessential detail (i.e. the veins on the dragonfly wings). I would agree though that maybe a fabricator should be consulted on this. You don't necessarily have to use the same font for other trail markings. Typically there is the logo font which is used sparingly, like only for mile marks for example, but then an easier to read font is used for copy text and signs. I would recommend using a font that is not similar to the logo font (called Bell MT) and maybe use a san-serif font such as Arial. I can help decide what font to use where though if you would like.

Let me know if you need anymore changes or help with any other design ideas.

Thanks,

Emily Simons

Hi Tom,

Thank you for the feedback. The comments are very helpful and I would appreciate a little more guidance if possible. According to Stage III at this point the group needs to decide which logo they want to see as the final logo. I am willing to ignore the schedule I made and work on this one logo for as many rounds as we need to but in my experience it is best to focus on one logo at this point. If we keep the option open to the six logos we will be working on this project for many more weeks and I know you hope to have the logo by the end of the month. It is far less time consuming to both the group and myself to perfect one logo than to perfect several. It appears that "D" might be the favorite but please let me know if this assumption is correct.

Thanks,

Emily Simons

Emily,

Compiled comments on Stage III attached.  The week got away from me.  If this provides appropriate guidance for the next Stage, then great. If not please ask for help.

Thanks

Tom

Hi Tom,

Stage IV for the trail logo is due tomorrow and I haven't heard any feedback. I want to make sure that you received my email with the six logos attached without any problems. It is in my sent box but I know most email accounts have size restrictions for attachments.

If the group is busy with other things at the moment that is fine. Just let me know what's going on.

Thanks,

Emily Simons

A couple of comments based on first reaction:

(1) I really like the logo on the post. Doing it as a negative makes it really stand out. One question would be the  color used --- will it be black or some other suitably contrasting color?

(2) Using the negative version on paper and website would make for consistency vs. using a positive image for these.

(3) As to fonts, I don't know that we need to look at many different ones, but an image that allows comparison of the current font to a sans-serif font (e.g., Arial) might be a simple exercise worth doing. That might let us know if one or the other might stand out better both on a post as well as in paper or website use. It's also possible that a sans serif font might appear too dominant or too "cold" (for lack of a better description right now) and distract the eye from the logo. In the attached PDF see a simple albeit perhaps crude comparison:

top is Times New Roman 24 pt
middle is Arial 24 pt
bottom is Arial 22 pt (reduced to approximate actual size of Times New Roman 24 pt)

Just a suggestion to consider, hope it helps more than it might confuse...
