============================
About the workshop:
A traditional view holds that potential precedes actuality. According to this view, an event occurs when entities with existing potentialities participate in it and these potentialities are realized. Among those, dispositions determine the behaviors of their bearers under certain circumstances. They are closely related to the causal powers of objects in the world and encompass entities such as abilities, capabilities, and tendencies. The study of dispositions and other realizable entities has become a popular topic in the field of Formal Ontology, with applications in various areas including the representation of diseases, modeling of functions and affordances, and description of organizational capabilities. The POWERs event focuses on dispositions and other realizable entities, inviting researchers from diverse fields such as information science, philosophy, and cognitive science to present their work on this topic and explore different perspectives.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
o Is the distinction between realizable and non-realizable (sometimes called “categorical”) properties metaphysical or linguistic?
o Intrinsicness vs. extrinsicness of realizable entities
o How may the distinction between dispositions and powers be relevant for formal ontology?
o Can dispositions provide a good account of causation? Can they offer a good substitute for laws of nature in ontology?
o How could blocks, finks, and antidotes be relevant for applied ontology?
