Dear friends,Please see the attached information regarding letters from USCIS to selected refugees from Myanmar. This was discussed at an ABC, USA meeting two weeks ago. I was not present due to illness. Please read the advice from immigration lawyers. Please notify me should you need additional help.In Christ,Robert D. Subject: FW: USCIS InvestigationFriends,As follow up to our discussion at REMC about the USCIS letters being sent to our Chin and Kachin friends, please see the attachments and information below from Florence Li, staff to the Burma Refugee Commission. We are getting slightly different messages from different groups we contact, so you will have to use your best judgment at this point in terms of how to help those in your communities. The Commission will continue to work on this, but the sample letter and responses from various organizations will help you be better informed. Subject: USCIS InvestigationHi Joan,I have staff meeting all week and depart for Boston in the morning. Here are some information I gathered regarding USCIS letter sent to individuals, mostly the Chin, Kachin and Karen who lived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia between 2009-2013.Please share with the REMC as you see fit. The Burma Refugees Commission had three conference calls to collect as many information from the ethnic leaders. They believed there are at least 2,000 individuals received this type of letter across the U.S.ABHMS is working with Church World Services (CWS) to attain information and helpful resources. Florence had informed Jeff Haggray and Lee Spitzer. Leslie Turley had informed Sharon Koh. The Commission will have one more conference call on May 3 and then comply a report to BGM.See attached sample letter sent from USCIS field officer in Wisconsin.International Rescue Committee informed community about USCIS letter
CWS advice for those refugees who have received letters from Homeland Security to come in for an interview regarding their refugee application.1. Persons who have received a letter should keep their appointments and get an immigration attorney to accompany them. If they miss their appointment, they risk deportation.2. Refugees who were clients of CWS, that is, they were resettled by CWS, can go to one of their regional offices and ask for free legal representation at their hearings.3. If a CWS regional office does not have an attorney (as not all their offices have immigration lawyers) they can go to the CLINIC website and find an immigration lawyer who will provide either pro bono service or service at a reduced rate. CWS is a partner of CLINIC, Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc., and Jen said that we can ask their immigration lawyers for help with legal representation. Here is the link, which is a map of immigration legal service that Catholic Charities provides: https://cliniclegal.org/directory.4. CWS is working on a Guidance packet for churches for advocacy. When that is ready Jen is going to forward that to me and I will distribute it to you.Rev. Paul Aita attended a workshop on such matter and shared information.I incline to believe that high level of political contact with legislators, state senators and collective efforts from umbrella resettlement agencies are ways to deal with this subject matter. Please let me know if you have any question.Rev.
