I read about a dirty hack based on installing the older Kontakt 5.6, where there was still an add library option (currently I have Kontakt 6.4.2 and Kontakt 5.8.1 on my computer). Is there not a cleaner way of doing it ?
I answer my own question while I am discovering Kontakt: only libraries for Kontakt Player can be installed in the Kontakt left panel list of instruments. For other it is only possible to use a list of favorites.
Everything is explained here for Kontakt newbies like I still am:
Note that many libraries come with a serial number which has to be entered into Native Access to register the library. Once entered - you have to now point to the actual library (place where you installed the samples) at which point your Kontakt 5 and Kontakt 6 will see the library properly
Open Native Access and log into your Native Instruments account email. Once logged in, you will see Add Serial in the left-hand menu. You can then input the serial number that you received via email (if you've lost track just head to your account page here):
Click on Choose a location and browse to find the main folder for this specific library. In this example, we're looking for Spitfire Audio - Ambient Guitars (the folder created by the Spitfire Audio App install):
That's it, you're all set! Bear in mind, if this is your first time using Kontakt or Kontakt player you will also need to Install Kontakt via Native Access also. For specifics on this you can see and read more at Native Instrument's support here.
So, back to my problem. I was trying to install Native Access (in order to get Kontakt Player) with wine, but it seems like it's missing a library called "Windows.UI.ViewManagement.UISettings". I have wine 6.0.3 (installed through apt) and wine tools, in their 64-bits version. But there's actually a lot more stuff happening when I try to install Native Access, so I've recorded it and made a video (EDIT : now private).
I have no idea what causes this problem. I installed the Spitfire Audio app through wine and it works just fine, I can even run the BBCSO Discover with Carla and LinVst (which both use wine if I'm not mistaken), so I'm pretty unsure about what I'm missing here. I've also made a research about the error message I was getting but I found nothing really helpful.
However, I encountered a second problem while trying to install ProjectSAM's "The Free Orchestra" library. Now I'm not sure if this should go to a separate thread or not, please don't get mad at me if I'm posting this in the wrong place...
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here. Maybe the library just isn't compatible with Linux at all, but I think it's more likely something super simple that I'm missing. If anyone has any idea of what it could be, please let me know.
If you're using an older distro and you're getting a Mount option 'unhide' is not allowed error when trying to mount the file, then you may need to manually create or edit /etc/udisks2/mount_options.conf first, adding the following to the file:
I suppose this is happenning because something else (Nautilus maybe ?) automatically mounts the device. When I first ran these lines as root (I thought you had to be root to mount a device, but apparently with udisksctl you can do it as a normal user) it worked, but of course I couldn't access or execute the files myself.
I'm not sure if all of the nosuid, etc. options are needed but these are the ones that come automatically when mounting the image through Nautilus, and looking at the manual entry for mount they seemed pretty important so I just put them in case.
And it worked ! Here's a screenshot of the library running in Waveform :
For anyone who wants to skip the mounting of an ISO to install libraries, you can extract the ISO using 7zip. 7zip extracts everything needed properly and then the installers can be run without problems. I have managed to install the Studio Drummer libraries, The Maverik, and a bunch of other stuff this way without any problems, and Native Access 1 reports them as installed.
If you don't already have an account set up (you're given an option to do this at checkout), you will need to do so (keep in mind that your Pulse account is separate to your Impact Soundworks account).
In Pulse, use the serial key for your Kontakt product to redeem your instrument. If you keep the "Install Now" checkbox checked, Pulse will immediately install the instrument once you click the "Redeem" button.
Your instrument has already been redeemed in Pulse. This might be because you are attempting to redeem the instrument to another account, or because something went wrong on our end; first double-check if you might have redeemed the instrument to a different Pulse account, and if you're unable to find it, let us know.
Pulse does not accept your install location. This often happens when you're attempting to install to what Pulse considers a "not safe" location or places it doesn't have access to through system permissions. If this happens, select a different location and try again. You can always manually move the instrument folder later if you want to (but you will need to use Pulse to reconnect to it so it can "see" where the folder is).
For Kontakt full version libraries, these are not activated in Native Access, and do not load from the Libraries tab. Load up one of the instrument NKIs in Kontakt via the Files browser. You can also click on the .nki file itself from your computer's file browser (File Explorer on Windows, Finder on Mac), and Kontakt will open it automatically.
A: You're attempting to load a non-Player instrument inside of the free Kontakt Player. A good way to confirm this on Kontakt versions 6 and up is to look in the top-left corner of the Kontakt window; if it says "Kontakt Player" you are using the free Kontakt Player and will need to upgrade to Kontakt Full in order to use this instrument.
A: You are trying to register an instrument that is not compatible with Kontakt Player. As long as you have the full version of Kontakt (not the free Player), all you need to do is load the instrument through the Files tab in Kontakt; no registration required!
A: Please note that Pulse requires you to have twice the library size available to install. The reason for this is to ensure there is extra space for SSDs / OS drives - for example, if a product takes 20GB to download and install but the user has only 21GB on their drive, it can cause issues if the drive gets too close to 100% capacity. Once the library is installed, the final folder size should be identical to the product information on our website.
A: No. In fact, once you create a login, that is the login you should use for any system you install your products onto. Pulse will keep track of all your registered products for you so that you can immediately download.
A: Go to the Library tab and click on the product icon to view more info. Pulse keeps track of what version you're on, the location your folder is downloaded to, and even lets you open this location.
I have purchased a license for Midi Guitar 2, which originally comes with only 5 instruments in its library. I have clicked on the link to add instruments and have downloaded the 2 zip files, and have unzipped them within the same folder. I cannot figure out how to add them to the Midi Guitar library. Can someone please provide some guidance?
After I have unzipped the zipped folders, I now see other subfolders in each. I placed the unzipped subfolders in the same VST location as the already existing VSTs in MG2. I ran the scan, but no luck.
Thanks for your comment about adding the player. I did add the player and then repeated the scan, and still no luck when scanning. If there are no VSTs then the scan has nothing to detect. Then how do these instruments get added to the MG2 library? I appreciate your input in solving this ongoing mystery.
You must not (can not) add the instruments but the player. I also read in the manual that it can be loaded in Kontakt as well. You can also get a free version of the NI Kontakt player (install it) and load it in MG2.
Okay, I have added the free player you suggested. I also have Kontact installed with some instruments that I purchased. So how do I access the instruments in the 2 zip files that I downloaded? Any advice you can provide will be appreciated.
the instruments CANNOT be added to the MG2 library, because they are not VST instruments. however, the SFZ player you choose to install (which itself is a VST instrument) will always appear in the library.
To get your free copy of the Kontakt Factory Selection library, simply add Komplete Start to your Native Instruments account. The free Komplete Start bundle contains Kontakt Player, Kontakt Factory Selection, Play Series Selection, and other music production software goodies.
Kontakt Play Selection is another free Kontakt library from Native Instruments. It is based on a selection of presets from three different libraries: Analog Dreams, Ethereal Earth, and Hybrid Keys. Kontakt Play Selection contains 10 presets from each library.
As we already mentioned, the easiest way to get Kontakt Play Selection is to add the Komplete Start bundle to your Native Instruments account. You can then use the Native Access license manager to download and install the library.
The third free Kontakt library by Native Instruments is called Kinetic Treats. It is based on a collection of toy samples. The sampled source sounds were used to create more complex patches with the help of some clever processing powered by the Kontakt engine.
Kinetic Treats comes with three instrument patches: Electric Train Set, Record Player Music Box, and Xylo Polyphones. It is included in the Komplete Start bundle along with Kontakt Player, Kontakt Factory Selection, and Kontakt Play Selection.
Our favorite is the Foundations Piano, based on a Kawai grand piano. Heavyocity combined the grand piano samples with a sound design layer called a creative texture. The result is a lush, cinematic piano that will add an epic mood to any piece of music.
