During the recent riots in Egypt looters were able to gain access to
the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and removed and or damaged several
statues belonging to antiquities from King Tut's tomb. One of Tut in a
boat about to harpoon a hippopotamus and the other of Tut standing on
a leopard. Both the boat and leopard bases have been badly damaged and
their gilded statues were not visible in the pictures I saw. The
oldest model boat in the museum collection along with figurines in the
boat was also damaged. Dr Zahi Hawass claims the statues and articles
were damaged as the looters searched for jewelry. However reports that
several mummies in the museums collection have been beheaded may belie
that idea. Police and or security personnel are believed to be
involved in the looting and damage as access to the Museum was gained
via the rooftop. This is a sad day for Egypt and the Egyptian people
that such items that help promote knowledge of the past of this great
country are targets while the Egyptian people struggle for more
freedom.
