A couple of issues have come up that require clarification, sorry.
* Access Options
I accidentally left off the last option (which is actually the
one _I_ use :-), leaving some folks with the impression that it
wasn't available. So, here is the complete list, as presented
on the sign-up page; my added comments are [bracketed].
No Email
I will read this group on the web
[In this mode, messages do not get mailed to the user.
Instead, the user is expected to peruse the list if and
when s/he feels like it. This is a Bad Idea, unless the
user (a) checks in very regularly or (b) really doesn't
care about keeping up with things.]
Abridged Email (No more than 1 email per day)
Get a summary of new activity each day
[This is a useful option for moderately interested users.
The summary lets the user know that new topics have come
up, but reading the email requires clicking on a link.]
Digest Email (Approximately 1 email per day)
Get up to 25 full new messages bundled into a single email
[This is another useful option for moderately interested
users. The user gets all of the mail, but it gets delayed
a bit and bundled into aggregate email messages. Note that
this method gets in the way of using the Subject lines to
find particular topics, etc.]
Email (Approximately 9 emails per day)
Send each message to me as it arrives
[As noted above, this is the approach I use. I combine it
with a filter that stuffs the messages into a "mailbox". I
can then look at the mailbox whenever I wish.]
* Authorization
Anyone who was sent an invitation should be able to click on the
link, walk through the procedure, and join the new group without
needing any authorization. If you come in cold, however, expect
to need an authorization. There may also be an issue if the
email address you're using to sign up with is different than the
one that the invitation went to. Stay calm; if you're interested
in discussing Beveridge speakers, we want you on the list!
