An internet-based technology providing early warning information of floods in the rivers has come into use in Chitwan for the first time.
With this system in place, one can know from home about the flood situation in the rivers. Earlier people had to go to the river site to know about the water flow and the severity of the floods.
There is this small division on the left of the home page of www.hydrology.gov.np which gives the realtime flood warning.
It can even be viewed directly on the map of Nepal in the home page which provides the warning information in different rivers of Nepal.
The Department of Weather Forecast and Meteorology has brought this technology in use under the Tele Metric System or Real Time Data.
Journalists in Chitwan were familiarized with the technology for the first time in Nepal, said resource person at Chitwan District Disaster management Committee, Balaram Luitel.
The successful use of the technology could be replicated to the bigger rivers of Nepal including the Narayani, Karnali and Koshi, and their auxiliary rivers, said Chief at Tele Metric System Bibhuti Pokharel.
As data on river level is updated in every five minutes under this technology, it would be helpful for people to adopt protection measures on time, said Buddhi Kumal of Practical Action.
