Who Are the Guardians of the Galaxy?
This group of intergalactic outlaws became unlikely heroes of Xandar when defending the planet from utter destruction. Now pardoned as thanks for their brave and selfless acts, the Guardians travel the galaxy in search of new missions. They are:
Cues and comments that Peter has been with lots of women across the galaxy, as well as references to his past exploits, like a joke about "black light" picking up how filthy his ship is or another about him being referred to as "one who lain with [alien creature]." Sexual tension between Peter and Gamora, who almost kiss more than once. Peter wears just boxer briefs when he's hosed down at a prison. Rocket suggests that because the prisoners find Gamora attractive, she should "trade" favors for what they need to escape.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY follows adventurer Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), who was abducted from Earth as a child in 1988 after his mother died. Fast-forward 26 years into the future: In a galaxy far, far away, Peter is a rogue outlaw who steals a powerful orb he plans to sell. After getting arrested, he reluctantly teams up with a group of criminals he's briefly imprisoned with -- Rocket, a genetically modified raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper); Gamora (Zoe Saldana), the adopted daughter of the most dangerous being in the universe; tree-like Groot (Vin Diesel); and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), who's on a personal mission to avenge his family. The fate of the universe lies in the hands of these not-quite-friends when it's clear that the villainous Ronan (Lee Pace) plans to use the orb to destroy an entire planet.
The Guardians of the Galaxy are a team of intergalactic mercenaries who primarily defend the Andromeda galaxy. The team was founded in 2014 when Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Groot and Drax the Destroyer assembled to save Xandar from being decimated by Ronan the Accuser. Recognized by the Nova Empire, the Guardians were hired shortly after by the Sovereign's leader Ayesha to defeat an Abilisk, but became their enemies when Rocket stole from them. They gained three new members in Mantis, Nebula and Yondu Udonta when they banded together to defeat Ego, which resulted in Udonta's death. Nebula then left the team as the remaining Guardians resumed their adventures.
When Peter Quill stole the Orb, Sakaarans troops led by Korath the Pursuer hunted for Quill but he escaped in the Milano. Yondu Udonta and his Ravager clan went to Morag after the Orb but discovered Quill's treachery and set a bounty on him. Elsewhere in the galaxy, Ronan the Accuser was informed of Quill stealing the Orb, so he sent Gamora to retrieve it. On Xandar, Quill tried to sell the Orb to the Broker and was later attacked by Gamora, only to be intercepted by Rocket Raccoon and Groot after the bounty on Quill. None were successful as they were soon apprehended and arrested by the Nova Corps.[1]
The Guardians, along with a twig from Groot that Rocket Raccoon had planted, then boarded the Milano and departed from Xandar. After Quill played his new mixtape, he manned the pilot's seat and asked what they should do next, ultimately deciding upon doing good and bad. During their time flying through space as a new family with a reborn Groot, they decided to take jobs, marketing themselves as "galaxy savers".[1]
The reunited Guardians all boarded the Laser Drill, where Peter Quill informed them that to kill Ego, they had to go to his core and destroy it. They then flew below the planet's surface, where Rocket Raccoon noted that they could raise their prices if they've saved the galaxy twice.
Mantis then revealed that she was also leaving, stating that her whole life she had just been doing what others had wanted and that she now wanted go on her own to figure out what she wants. Drax the Destroyer told Mantis that he would come with her, but she declined his gesture. Nebula told Drax that she needed him staying on Knowhere to help her care for all of the children. Rocket Raccoon asked if Nebula would lead the Guardians, but she said she was also leaving to focus on leading Knowhere. Rocket was upset that the Guardians were ending, but Quill told Rocket that he would now be the leader, as the galaxy still needed the team, and they all saluted him.
Under Rocket's leadership, the Guardians would continue to help out those in need across the galaxy, all while growing close with each other as a family, particularly bonding over the music on the Zune. While on a mission on Krylor to save a town from a stampede of creatures, the team discussed their favourite music artists from the Zune. When the stampede arrived, the Guardians prepared for the upcoming fight, and on Rocket's signal, the Guardians charged into battle.[11]
After the Badoon's final defeat, the Guardians of the Galaxy found themselves unable to fit into civilian life and decided to leave Earth as per Starhawk's suggestion, since he had a mission for the team.[11] As space explorers aboard the Captain America starship, they found a craft adrift in outer space and inhabited by last surviving Mercurian colonist, Nikki. A survivor of the Badoon invasion and a weapons expert, she joined the Guardians of the Galaxy. Marching towards the center of the galaxy, the Guardians of the Galaxy clashed with the Karanada, an all-consuming and empty entity that feasted on galaxies. Starhawk seemingly perished when attacking the void of hunger by himself.[12]
In their next adventure across the galaxy, the Guardians landed on planet Haven, the final destination of Earth's mutants. The planet was ruled by Rancor and her few mutant lieutenants, with the majority of the population being enslaved humans. Starhawk sent some of the Guardians to diplomatically dialogue with Rancor and others of them to assist the Huma Resistance. Rancor's forces captured the Guardians and killed the Resistant except for human Giraud and the shapeshifter Replica.[41] The Guardians brutally retaliated, with Starhawk introducing Giraud to the power of the Phoenix.[42] The Guardians of the Galaxy defeated Rancor, who fled with her lieutenants, while Starhawk executed a massive exodus from Haven to Mainframe's planet by himself, causing the Guardians to distrust him.[43]
Investigating the activities of the real Ripjak, the Guardians of the Galaxy learned he was based on Mars. On the red planet, the heroes found several trophies of the Martian invasion of Earth in the war of the two worlds from one thousand years before.[87] Ripjak assaulted the Guardians in the name of Mars as the last Martian, knocking them out and resuming his massacre.[88] Confronting the serial killer, the Guardians learned he actually had as his mission eliminating a plague that had eradicated the Martians and many other races in the galaxy.[89]
