As the game is now here, you'll want to know the exact Baldur's Gate 3 download size and required install capacity so you can find out precisely how long it will take to get it up and running on your system.

Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the most expansive CRPGs ever made, and one of the few titles that brings the genre into the realm of AAA gaming. With so many interconnecting systems and a massive world to explore, it's no wonder the game has such a massive installation size.

Back in October 2020, the Director of Publishing for Larian Studios tweeted that the Baldur's Gate 3 install size is around 80 GB, saying that "we like you having at least 150 GB because that's just good for you".

This is the first proper Baldur's Gate entry in 23 years; the last was Baldur's Gate 2, released in 2000. Baldur's Gate 3 goes a long way toward bringing the decades-old franchise up to modern standards: gorgeous new graphics, with both a top-down and a third-person mode; truly turn-based, DnD-style combat; and all the new races, classes, and other adjustments added in the latest edition of DnD, which came out in between Baldur's Gate 2 and 3. Of course, with new standards for PC performance, Baldur's Gate 3 is able to render a far larger map than any of its predecessors in the series. But its exact size is a more complicated question.

And that's just the main map, called The Wilderness - there are also two slightly smaller areas that make up the rest of the Baldur's Gate 3 journey. These are The Nautiloid, a small, town-sized flying ship that serves as the game's tutorial area, and The Underdark, a far larger underground area similar to Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom's Depths. Together, these effectively double the size of the game's map. All in all, the world map of Baldur's Gate 3 takes up a decent chunk of the continent, and it's fair to say it's the size of a country on the larger side of medium.

Skyrim is the usual baseline for fantasy RPG map size comparisons. After all, its map is still impressively large today, including the entirety of a country within its borders. The surface map in Baldur's Gate 3 seems to be close to, or maybe about 1.5 times the size of Skyrim's. They each contain nine major cities and settlements dotted around their respective maps of average-sized video game countries. Combine the surface with The Underdark, though, and Baldur's Gate 3 is roughly three times Skyrim's size. Skyrim, however, is less linear; with its level scaling, players can basically pick any direction and wander anywhere from the very beginning of the game.

Another appropriate comparison to Baldur's Gate 3 (and not just in map size) is Dragon Age. Historically, these games have had similar gameplay, and have offered players a near-equivalent degree of freedom in deciding how the story unfolds. Dragon Age games, however, are far more linear - many areas have to be unlocked before players can enter them. Compared to Dragon Age: Inquisition, the most recent game in the series, Baldur's Gate 3 is probably about four times the size of its world map.

It's been 20 years since Baldur's Gate 2, so naturally, the capabilities of the average gaming PC have increased by a remarkable degree. Baldur's Gate 2 was set in and around the city of Amn, which functioned as the game's hub area from which several branching paths gradually became available. It really only took up a small slice of Faerûn - probably about the size of England's lower third, but not open-world and all rendered in an isometric perspective. Baldur's Gate 3 is far bigger and more open - it appears to be roughly three times the size of Baldur's Gate 2.

Baldur's Gate 3 also had an early access mode that included its first act, taking place entirely within a small chunk on the western end of its map. For reference, the full game's map is about three times the size of the early access area. However, the eastern half of the map is far denser, containing more major cities and settlements than the western half by far. That's also where the latter two acts of the game take place. Therefore, while the full map is about three times the size of the early access map, the full game of Baldur's Gate 3 takes almost seven times as long to beat.

Whatever the exact size of Baldur's Gate 3, it's undeniable that its world map is enormous. It can easily take players hundreds of hours to see all it has to offer, which is only appropriate for a DnD-based video game. Its scale, length, and freedom can only be compared to an ever-expanding tabletop campaign championed by an ingenious DM, which makes Baldur's Gate 3 the perfect DnD video game.

"There are still traces" of Dispel Magic in the game - much like the Exhaustion system - "where [developers] foresaw" the system and still wanted to play around it. Vincke says that "we wanted to do it, but it was just too much. It literally would have doubled the size of the game just to support that one spell properly."

The region surrounding Baldur's Gate received an abundance of drizzling rain and sleet with frequent-occurring fog that rolled through the city's streets.[18][24] This excessive precipitation was well-mitigated with an advanced water system where underground basins collected the run off rainwater, maneuvering it through subterranean aqueducts that emptied it into massive cistern beneath the Temples District.[21]

Historically, the Baldurian people had a complicated relationship with taxation at the hands of city officials. Excessive gate tolls incited a transformative revolution in the city in its formative years,[2] leading to the formation of its preeminent form of governance. Ironically, that same governing body enacted nearly identical taxers that remained for hundreds of years.[37] By the 15th century, city officials collected tolls from passersby at nearly every cite gate, through a vast, far-reaching bureaucracy that was constantly under threat of corruption.[34]

After Balduran vanished, sometime in the mid-1000s DR,[51] local farmers took control of the wall's construction and used it to protect their own holds and farmsteads, rather than the harbor.[48] Nearby townsfolk and other outsiders flocked to the fledgling town for protection and the hamlet swelled in size. The walled region of Gray Harbor came to be known as "Old Town", while newly-constructed buildings, between the southern wall and the harbor, were built in the portion thereafter known as "Heapside".[2] And by the Year of the Unblinking Eye, 446 DR, the settlement was a city widely known as Baldur's Gate. Some scholars said that the name "Baldur's Gate" was already in existence sometime before the Year of the Late Sun, 300 DR.[3]

As their anger turned to action, the smugglers, pirates and merchants of Heapside breached Baldur's gate and stormed Old Town by force. Just before they laid siege to the keep of High Hall, the four most-senior sea captains argued for the farmer-lords' surrender. After a quick vote, a truce was struck between the two parties and the retired captains were installed as leaders, jokingly known as "Dukes", of the rapidly-growing city that was earnestly renamed Baldur's Gate.[48][2]

The remaining Council of Four blamed the Grand Duke's death on agents of the Guild, the city's most prevalent thieves' group, and enlisted a group of adventurers help investigate the tragedy.[note 1][31] Shortly after, the city experienced a sudden spike of criminal activity including robberies[56] and vandalism, which caused the Flaming Fist to crack down on some shadier establishments in the Lower City and Outer City regions.[36][57] As the Baldurian Parliament responded by passing bewildering sumptuary laws, stating that citizens had to wear attire befitting their station,[36] vandals removed the hands of five beloved statues that decorated the city.[58]

It had nine districts, most of which encircled Dusthawk Hill: Blackgate, located north from the Black Dragon Gate, Stonyeyes, Norchapel, Little Calimshan, Whitkeep, Sow's Foot, Twin Songs, Tumbledown, which extended south from the Cliffgate, and Rivington, south of Wyrm's Crossing.[68][94][95]

As anyone was welcome to visit or conduct business in The Gate, its population continually swelled as the city's geographical size grew well beyond its walls. How the city did not collapse upon itself, was unfathomable to many.[10]

While cats were abundantly found throughout the city, as they were used to eliminate vermin from cargo ships, dogs were not a common sight by any stretch. Livestock, such as horses, cows, goats and like, were prohibited from the city proper,[103] relegated to the paddocks and pens of the Outer City.[104] The city's law forbade animals bigger than a peacock to gain entrance into the city. Some considered that regulation to be archaic.[50]

Fortunately, there will be a way to return to the traditional six-person parties. You can increase the party size from four to six (or more) by either modifying the game or editing a save. But bear in mind that the game is balanced around four players, so you might want to wait for a thorough mod that modifies the entire game to support the larger party size.

Is this just the base game size? There's probably a day one patch on top as well. And hopefully with how successful it should be, I hope that there may be expansions or dlc content similar to witcher 3.

The official information has been shared by Larian Studios on the game's official X account. Based on the latest post, the upcoming update will be 30 GB in size, and the developers have requested players to keep at least 130 GB of free space on their respective platforms.

Based on the same information, the update size is expected to be similar on both PC and PS5. So far, there hasn't been any fresh information about the Xbox launch, but a date is expected to be announced at The Game Awards 2023.
