As a site collection administrator, you can view and manage deleted items across a site collection from the Site Collection Administration Recycle Bin page. From this page, you can view items that are currently in a user's Recycle Bin and items that a user has deleted from his or her Recycle Bin, sending the items to the second stage Recycle Bin also known as the Site Collection Recycle Bin.

The Site Collection (Second-Stage) Recycle Bin gives the administrator of a site collection greater control over deleted items by providing a second stage safety net before an item is permanently deleted from a site. When you delete an item from your Recycle Bin, the item is sent to a second stage Recycle Bin (also known as the Site Collection (Second-Stage) Recycle Bin) that the administrator of the site collection manages.

By default, items that users delete are sent to the Recycle Bin. As a site collection administrator, you can view those items in the End user Recycle Bin items view on the Site Collection Administration Recycle Bin page. When a user deletes an item from the Recycle Bin, it is sent to the Site Collection (Second-Stage) Recycle Bin. As a site collection administrator, you can view those items in the Deleted from end user Recycle Bin view.

When you delete items from a document library or list in Microsoft Teams or SharePoint, they aren't immediately removed. Deleted items go into the SharePoint site recycle bin for a period of time or until they are emptied from the recycle bin. The SharePoint site recycle bin isn't the same as the Windows recycle bin that you see on your desktop.

While items are in the site recycle bin, you can restore items you deleted to their original location. If you're using SharePoint in Microsoft 365, you can even view and restore items that were deleted by someone else, as long as you have edit permissions.

Deleted items are retained in recycle bins for a certain period of time. For SharePoint, the retention time is 93 days. It begins when you delete the item from its original location. When you delete the item from the site recycle bin, it goes into the site collection recycle bin. It stays there for the remainder of the 93 days, and then is permanently deleted.

No, as a regular user, you do not have the permission to empty the SharePoint Recycle Bin completely. Only SharePoint administrators can perform this action to permanently delete all items from the Recycle Bin.

what is the trick for finding specific files in SPO recycle bin? we can only sort by title and date deleted, there is no filtering and when there are thousands of files, it is an endless scroll which is unusable.

As recycleBin is now the only Back Up management mechanism in SPO, it is almost indispensable to make it more efficient. At the moment it works that's it. Good search / filtering mechanism would make it great.

We had an incident where a user misunderstanding onedrive synchronisation just deleted 7000 files from his synced folders (Sharepoint). Was hell to find all these mistakenly deleted files (as other files were also rightfully deletes in the middle).

Can we run a similar command to export the items from the Second Stage recycle bin of a users' OneDrive recycle bin? Also do you know if we can run a Flow that checks for items in a users OneDrive Second Stage recycle bin?

When using the SharePoint Online application within a browser, items deleted by any user are retained in the site Recycle Bin for 93 days from the time they were deleted them from their original location. They stay in the site Recycle Bin the entire time, unless someone deletes them from there or empties that Recycle Bin. In that case, the items go to the site collection Recycle Bin, also known as the second-stage Recycle Bin, where they stay for the remainder of their retention period. Items deleted from the site collection Recycle Bin are purged immediately. If the item deleted causes the site collection Recycle Bin to exceed its quota, it starts purging the oldest items until there's space for the most recently deleted item. For info about restoring deleted items, see Restore items in the Recycle Bin of a SharePoint site and Restore deleted items from the site collection recycle bin.

Hard deletion occurs when a user purges deleted items from the site collection Recycle Bin, when the retention and backup periods expire, or when an administrator permanently deletes a site collection using the Remove-SPODeletedSite cmdlet. When a user hard deletes (permanently deletes, or purges) content from SharePoint Online, all encryption keys for the deleted chunks are also deleted. The blocks on the disks that previously stored the deleted chunks are marked as unused and available for reuse.

Users can also interact with the SharePoint platform by using CSOM/REST APIs. API calls can be used to either recycle or delete items on SharePoint such as files and folders. Recycling an item adds it to the Recycle Bin, similar to the browser application behavior described earlier in this article. However, deleting results in the item being immediately purged and it will not be recoverable from the site or site collection Recycle Bins. You can read more about SharePoint APIs here.

Is there some sort of filter or search in the recycle bin to find a spesific deleted document, user deleted a document but can't remember the date and time, only parts of the name but browsed through the recycle bin but no luck.

the feature for filtering and restoring items from SPO recycle bin, a lot of users complain about they can't filter and restore items from recycle bin, so we developed this feature which allow user to perform below actions,

Reason for asking : Some people deletes file and remembers 100days later they accidently deleted the file, then it's a bit harder to get back the file just from restoring the file from the recycle bin.

@jvdwesthuizen I don't like your chances with that as neither of those links say how to download an item from the recycle bin specifically. I think all I can say is good luck with it and let us know if you find a way of getting the data out as it may be useful to other users.

Helping out with (small) company IT. Everyone using Office365, Sharepoint, OneDrive. The level of tech savvy is not high among users. People often deleting files, which I then need to find/restore. But going to Sharepoint online and trying to find things in the recycle bin is misery. Ie, today, I needed to find a copy of an .xls document that I knew the name of, but not the delete date for. Sharepoint Recycle bin just asks me to scroll through everything deleted, from today on back into history.

You can try to use this tool ,the feature for filter and restore items from SPO recycle bin, a lot of users complain about they can't filter and restore items from recycle bin, so we developed this feature which allow user to perform below actions,

If you want to know where the Recycle Bin is in SharePoint, it is located in the quick launch bar. Just look at the left side of the screen, and you will find it. If you cannot see it there, you can go to settings and click on site content. You will see the recycle bin icon on the top right of the site content page.

Almost all your deleted files SharePoint is stored in the Recycle Bin. You can restore them from the Bin if you have accidentally deleted them. All you need to do is to follow these steps:

SharePoint understands the importance of documents, and that is why it has facilitated users with two recycle bins. The 2nd Recycle Bin can be accessed by the site collection administrator, where he or she can restore documents deleted by the SharePoint users in the 1st Recycle Bin.
