Last year, I put a lot of time and energy into telling you all about Nick Masi. I let you in on (subjected you to?) the story of how he broke my young heart after sixth grade; and I admitted my fantasies of reconnecting with him one day. I told you what I learned when I finally did find him: that he'd been paralyzed from the waist down in a horrible construction accident. I told you that his wife left him, he lost his business and his boat and his truck, and that he desperately needed financial help.

You responded with kindness and generosity that touched my heart, and Nick's, and his mom Sue's. You made a huge difference!

Now, a year later, I wish I had better news to share. I wish I could tell you he's pain free and healthier by the day and working. But the doctors have not been able to fix his pain. He spent the last of the money raised last year on surgery intended to manage his pain (he had a pump installed near the base of his spine that delivers pain medication continuously), but it's not working. He's in the hospital frequently with complications of paraplegia, and he hasn't been well enough to support himself financially. His mother moved in with him to help out. As you might expect, he's struggling with depression.

Anyway... I hate that there's really nothing I can do to help. One small thing I can do, though, is spread the word that he still needs help, and that he could really, really use kind words and holiday wishes. To make a donation or simply to leave Nick a note of encouragement, please visit this post: http://www.prettygoodday.com/2009/12/merry-christmas-nick.html

Happy holidays!
xo,
beth
