Book Clubs can be so much more than a place to talk about books. They can be a place to get some intellectual stimulation, make new friends, have a few laughs, a coffee klatch and so much more! The Bethpage Book Banter Book Club has become a welcoming gathering place for readers of all ages and walks of life. Led by retired New York City teacher and Bethpage residentRobyn Kumar, readers opinions are encouraged and appreciated, and lively discussions are the norm! The Book Club usually meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 2:00 P.M. and the next evening, Wednesday at 7:30 P.M. to discuss the book selection of the month. However the dates may occasionally change, so check below to be sure. The club usually meets in the downstairs meeting room or the downstairs annex (check with the library on the day you’re coming). The library interloans many copies of the selections in both large and regular print, so all you have to do is go to the circulation desk, ask for the book and check it out! 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM6/11/2015 With Carole and Richard Witkover, World Travelers, Prize-winning Photographers
Join the Witkovers as they explore the magic of Iceland, whose name does not at all describe the true appearance of the country—only 10% of this land is ice-covered. Surprisingly, warm currents in the North Atlantic keep the climate rather mild. Iceland is truly an amazing place of active volcanoes spouting flames and gases, of glittering glaciers, and great shining rivers. It also boasts wonderful sandy beaches, hundreds of waterfalls, springs, and beautiful horses, sheep, puffins, and a fascinating Viking history. The country’s first settlers arrived in 870 A.D. in wooden ships from Norway, Denmark, and England. We will first visit Reykjavik, the capital, a modern seaside city of approximately 90,000 people, who speak Icelandic and English. Then, see the rugged natural beauty that is everywhere—the grassy cliffs, mountains, lakes, and geysers. Iceland is a young country when one considers the broad sweep of history, but it has one of the world’s first parliaments and is energy self-sufficient without reliance on fossil fuels. With so many waterfalls that provide hydro-electric power and a great deal of volcanic activity that provides abundant electricity and heat, Iceland is a modern country rich in contrasts—especially since more than half of the population still believes in trolls! A spectacular multimedia presentation in the style of Ken Burns.

Since 1960, people have benefited from the information obtained from thousands of downward-looking satellites launched into Earth's orbit. Many are used for communication (cell phones) or navigation (GPS). But many other improve our lives and our economy by providing information about weather, climate, water resources, deforestation, floods, tsunamis, forest fires, landslides, volcanoes, and the atmosphere in general.
The military and homeland security use satellite information to help keep our nation safe. This talk will take you through the world of satellites that are providing us with information that could not be obtained in any other way. This will be a fun, scientific, and educational night not to be missed!
