Watch The Skies
11:00 AM - 7:00 PM7/26/2015
The aliens have landed and it’s up to the nations of Earth to unite... or not. Or at the very least, pass some UN resolutions and try not to spy on each other too much. And then there’s all that interesting alien tech floating around in the grey market... How will it all shake out? There’s only one way to find out: A MEGAGAME.
What is a megagame? It’s like a game but bigger. Mega-bigger. Part RPG and part board game, Watch the Skies brings together 30-45 players who will play on teams as various nations and the alien visitors.

Historian Bud Livingston returns to the library to present the history of Memorial Day and how it is celebrated. 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM5/7/2015
With Thomas Germano, Professor of Art History, Farmingdale State College

This lecture will examine all the Vincent van Gogh's (1853-1890) stunning floral paintings, and his life and work during his last months in Auvers sur Oise, a small art colony town northwest of Paris. In May of 1980, just before his departure from the asylum in Saint-Remy, and only two months prior to his death, van Gogh created four still lifes, two of which can be found in the Metropolitan Museum, NYC today -- "Roses" and "Irises." These bouquets and their counterparts -- a vertical composition of irises (Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam) and a horizontal Composition of roses (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.) -- were conceived as decorative ensembles, much like his earlier suite of seven sunflower paintings made in Arles in Provence. He also produced many beautiful still lifes of floral arrangements over the course of his short career. In Auvers, see Vincent's memorable landscapes, wheat fields, orchards, the immortal portrait of his friend, Dr. Gachet, the famous church of Auvers, the Auberge Ravoux where he died -- and much more. An exciting visual lecture in glowing Powerpoint.

This Week at the Library

Adult

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM5/19/2015
With Dr. Sarah A. Hoover, Professor of Music, Hofstra University

Anton Dvorak (1841-1904), the greatest of Czech composers, is most noted for his wonderful melodic gifts and the unfailing brilliance of his orchestration. In 1892, Dvorak arrived in New York, charged with directing a new American school of music, The National Conservatory. During his four years in the United States, he composed several chamber works: The American String Quartet, best known of his 13 quartets, as well as the acclaimed Symphony No. 9, From the New World. It was premiered in the newly opened Carnegie Hall in 1893. The extraordinary success of this piece was due in large part to Dvorak’s ability to assimilate what he understood to be the native music of the United States. In his words, the “voice of the people” can be heard in African American melodies, the songs of the Creoles, Native American chants, and the plaintive tunes of homesick Germans, Norwegians, and other immigrant groups. This lecture will chronicle the people, events, and travels of Dvorak’s American visit and explore in detail the Symphony from the New World. The composer’s powerful musical intellect will be displayed in memorable audio and video clips.
