THE THREEPENNY OPERA by Kurt Weill (composer) and Bertolt Brecht (librettist) was a monumental achievement when it opened in Berlin in 1928. It is an early example of the modern musical comedy and its score is deeply influenced by jazz. It is also part satire, part aesthetic innovation, part sheer theatrical diversion. The work criticizes the over-indulgence and corruption of Weimar Republic Germany (1918-1933), and yet, ironically, it was embraced by that very public and became a great commercial success. By 1931, THREEPENNY was made into a successful film, and by 1933, Kurt Weill was on the run from Nazi Germany. However, it was not until Weill’s death in 1950 that the piece received a successful production in NYC where it went on to run for seven years. Based on an English 18th Century musical show, THE BEGGAR’S OPERA, by John Gay, THREEPENNY is relevant in any time and in any society. Though serious in its intention, the work is highly entertaining as it tells the story of Macheath and Polly Peachum and their ragtag world. THE THREEPENNY OPERA has been translated into 18 languages and performed more than 10,000 times—among them productions conducted by Leonard Bernstein. Many of its songs have become American standards. With resounding sound and colorful video in selected DVD clips and with lively explanation.

In this dark comedy, Riggan Thomson (Keaton), a faded Hollywood actor famous for his superhero roles struggles to mount a Broadway adaptation of a Raymond Carver story in the hope that by spearheading an ambitious new Broadway play he will, among other things, revive his moribund career. In many ways this is a foolhardy move, but the former movie superhero has high hopes that this creative gambit will legitimize him as an artist and prove that he is not just a Hollywood has-been. As he preps for the stage debut he has many possible disasters to deal with. The film was nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards and Keaton won Best Actor. The cast was nominated for Outstanding Cats in a Motion Picture.
