 | | | This Week at the LibraryAdult2:00 PM - 3:30 PM7/14/2015 With Shirley Romaine, Actress and TV Personality
Under the pen name Lewis Carroll, Charles Dodgson (1832-1898), an English cleric, became the third most read author in the English language (after the Bible and Shakespeare). He was also a noted mathematician, photographer, and poet, whose work richly displayed his love of literary nuance and nonsense. In truth, the renowned writer had two personalities. The Rev. Dodgson was a reserved, fussy, conservative bachelor, who remained aloof from the political and religious storms that troubled Victorian England. Lewis Carroll, however, was a delightful, lovable companion to children, especially, young Alice Liddell and her sisters, for whom he created his engaging stories and poems. In 1862, Dodgson began inventing his most famous fantastical tale for the Liddell children. ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND was published by Macmillan in 1865 under the pen name Lewis Carroll. Overwhelming success followed and Queen Victoria herself enjoyed the book so much that she commanded he dedicate his next work to her. Encouraged by fame, Carroll wrote THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS and THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK. This lecture will provide insights into the ideas and hidden meanings in the books and will be enhanced by exciting video clips and live dramatic readings.
