 | | | This Week at the LibraryAdult2:00 PM - 3:30 PM6/22/2015 With Thomas Germano, Professor of Art History, Farmingdale State College
In the late 13th Century, Aztec migrants settled in the Valley of Mexico, founding their capital, Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City), on an island in Lake Texcoco. Under the reign of the 9th and final emperor, Motecuhzoma (ruled 1502-1520), the Aztec Empire reached the pinnacle of its wealth, power, and size. However, the Aztecs fell to the Spanish conquistadors under Cortez in 1521. Through Aztec and Spanish records, we know much about this last pre-Columbian civilization. See once brightly-colored images of their gods and kings in ritual garb, warriors in splendid finery, and fantastic animals. Learn about their stories carved in stone—myths and tales of heroic conquests and of horrific human sacrifices by the priests. Filled with symbolism, Aztec art offers compelling glimpses into a strange, vanished world. Mixtec/Aztec codices (manuscripts), stone monuments and temple architecture have been preserved and many new archeological discoveries help in shedding more light on this ancient people. Professor Germano is uniquely qualified to present this lecture, as he participated in a National Endowment for the Humanities symposium in Oxaca, Mexico, where he studied Aztec civilization in detail. An exciting portrait of Aztec art from stone sculpture to feather designs and illustrated codices, all illustrated in colorful PowerPoint.
