 | | | This Week at the LibraryAdult2:00 PM - 3:30 PM4/15/2015 With Thomas Germano, Professor of Art History, Farmingdale State College
The early Italian Renaissance was an exciting time in culture and art (circa 1400-1450), as it served to transform Western ideas and styles from the medieval to the Renaissance periods. Gothic art offered relative flatness, formal stylization, and weightlessness. But, sculptors of this era observed the ruins of Greek and Roman works that lay all around them and therefore, developed heightened realism, scientific curiosity, humanism, and the reappearance of the human nude. This session will discuss the 23 masterpieces of early Florentine Renaissance sculpture, most never seen outside Italy, to be shown at the Museum of Biblical Art (MOBIA), NYC (February 20–June 14 2015). The exhibit will highlight master works by Donatello, the most important artist of the period, who emphasized realism, the importance of the individual, vitality, even psychology. Also included will be art by Luca Della Robbia—characterized by classic balance, tenderness and grace; Nanni di Banco with his well modeled Roman-like figures; and arresting works by Brunelleschi himself—famous builder of the Florence Cathedral (“Il Duomo”). The show brings together all these sculptures created for the Duomo in their original context. Professor Germano will make this period come alive in vivid PowerPoint. He will tell the amazing story of the Italian Renaissance as it unfolded in Florence.
