North
Korea has arrested another Christian
missionary—this time a 75-year-old Australian on his second trip to the country.
He is an Brethren Assembly worker.
During a visit to North Korea's capital city Pyongyang on
Wednesday, JOHN SHORT was
taken into custody, according to The New York Times. He had religious materials
with him that had been translated into Korean.

Short is the second missionary detained by
North Korea
in
recent years. American missionary Kenneth Bae is currently serving his second
year of his 15-year prison sentence, despite the
U.S.
government's efforts to call for his release. In addition to Bae, an 85-year-old
Korean war veteran was also arrested in November, but authorities released him
about a month later.
Australian officials remain in close contact with
the Swedish embassy in
Pyongyang
for assistance and information on
Short's wellbeing, although services in the dictatorship have been "extremely
limited," according to an Australian embassy spokesman.
"He won't be intimidated by the
communists," his wife, Karen Short, told Reuters. "I'm not upset, we're
Christian missionaries, and we have tremendous support for what we do."
Mrs Short said she was initially
shocked to receive the news of her husband’s detention, but was now focused on
helping him return home. "There’s no point [being] hysterical"', “I’m quite
calm," she said. "We’re Christian and I have many Christian friends that are
praying and supporting John and myself, so there’s no point to worry, there’s no
point [being] hysterical and emotional. He's courageous, this is my husband's
character, I hope things get better — he's in God's hands, we both totally
believe that."

The Shorts live in Hong Kong with their three children and have
spent more than 40 years sharing the gospel in Asia. John Short was arrested by Chinese officials
multiple times in the '90s for his misisonary efforts and barred from entering
the country for several years. Having converted to Christianity
aged 21, Mr Short was inspired by a Chinese evangelist and set sail for
Hong Kong in 1964, where he has been based
since. He worked with Chinese who fled the mainland for Hong Kong during the Cultural Revolution, and made
frequent missionary trips to the mainland after the death of Mao Zedong in 1976.
Mrs Short said her husband was arrested twice previously in China, the last
time in 1996 when he had his entry visa cancelled, but had since been allowed
back.
Bro John Short is an evangelist
and missionary commended by Unley Christian Chapel (Australia) and had been working in many Asian
countries mainly China for the last 50years. He is
based at Hong Kong and has a literature ministry printing and distributing
Bibles & Christian literature mainly in Hong Kong and China. He had a
big burden for the people of North Korea and went there on an
organized tour few days ago but unfortunately was arrested by the authorities as
they found Christian literature in his hotel room. His whereabouts are unknown
and there is a fear that he can be imprisoned upto 15
years.

We need all Christians everywhere to lift their hands and hearts
in prayer for this servant of God. Please pray for Australian authorities and
other countries like S Korea and China to help with the
negotiations.
