Dear brothers in Christ,

This is a long mail .... at first, seeing the length you may feel like skipping...... But I would suggest you to read the whole mail...... Its about the love of Christ that was displayed on the cross 2000 years back..... Now some of our fellow brethren are enjoying that love and are participating in extending that love... Whatever sacrifice we do it cannot match the sacrifice of our Savior.....

In Christ,

Priyan

Dear Body of Christ

Few responded to my letter captioned “The beautiful place I visited” that it was good, two of them want to support with prayer, and one asked for a presentation among Christian organisations. I agree with Capt. Sam’s statement that "LETTER WAS VERY MOVING BUT FOR ME IT SHOULD NOT STOP THERE"

Most of these Hospitals and other institutes (pharma companies, eduction institutes, etc), which are started by the missionaries are run by doctors or preachers. So they struggle when encountered with  engineering problems. This ignorance is capitalised by various people starting from the electrician/plumber/mason to Equipment / instruments providers. Given that about 21 mission hospitals and 30 community based projects are under Emmanuel Hospital's Association (EHA). We would need engineers to provide engineering solutions to these locations to start with.

Electrical Problem I'm not an electrical engineer, but when I saw the wiring of the hospital in AKS, I could immediately cry out that it was in shambles. So a MCA grad (Srinivas), Instrumentation Engineer (Alphaeus) & Mechanical Engineer (myself), undertook a study of the electrical lines and the documents available on site. Our observations are provided in the enclosed report.

Software Concern Thomas Abraham is designing a cost effective software for them, but the discussion was not coming to any conclusive end because the office staff were not able to provide the requirements to Thomas. It took Srinivas about 2 hours to understand the requirements from both ends and communicate to each-other.

Mechanical Breakdown Further, one of the missionary’s son, a mechanical Engineer in Ashok Leyland is coming to weld an equipment, because the local welders are not able to do it.

Due to lack of understanding & equipped manpower, currently the doctors are managing the hospitals. But due to their lack of engineering knowledge they are unable to implement any effective engineering solutions. This poses a need for Engineer in rural mission hospitals.

If a non electrical engineering group can identify the gap, I think if we can pool our heads and resources together we should be able to have best hospitals in the country. If we can together commit ourselves to undertake one of the following works in the EHA’s we can be of great help

  • 1.       Structural Engineer to assess the existing buildings and determine the need for reinforcement.
  • 2.       Civil Engineer to design cost effective construction. Help in good for construction drawings, BOQ’s, tender documents and cost audit
  • 3.       Architects to design building that utilises natural light & air (green building technologies) to reduce the energy consumption.
  • 4.       Instrumentation Engineer to assist in procurement and maintenance of equipments
  • 5.       Electrical Engineer, for the cost effective & safe wiring designs. Energy storage & usage plans
  • 6.       Software Engineer to help debug the problems in the software & also in successful implementation of certain software (Thomas would be able to explain)
  • 7.       Mechanical Engineer : help laminar flow of air in ICU’s and OT’s. Can also weld J,

Further, renewable energy sources such as Solar power, Biogas plants, wind power are options that could be explored. The avenues for an engineer in such rural hospitals are enormous, but there is none to do it.

We are not expecting you to re-locate, but can you give some committed time in a year to assess, plan , re-group and implement? Is 15-30 days in a year is too much to ask for missions?

For other experts, MBA’s & Managers

  • 1.       Can we help in consolidated procurement process for entire EHA, so that we get good deal?
  • 2.       Can we help in economic development of the region (agriculture, animal husbandry, handicraft training, marketing the goods, etc) , so that we also feed the poor?
  • 3.       Can some HR personnel help in training the people in goal setting and other HR trainings?
  • 4.       If the management permits, can we provide management consultancy?

I dream of an era where the doctors in the mission hospital will only treat patients.... rest will be handled by professionals.

The people marked in Cc are the ones who have expressed their interest to participate at various measures. Unless asked  we will not clutter your inbox with no new mails from our end. People marked in Cc are also free to drop-out. We don’t conclude that you are less spiritual, Let me Christianise it “It’s not your calling” J

Dear All
It was a blessed time for ourselves (Alphaeus, Srinivas, Shirley and myself) to be lead by God among his people in Asha Kiran Society (AKS), Orissa between Oct 7th – 15th . With the mis-informed understanding of mission field exposure, where people travel from one place to another, sympathising/empathising with their condition. We had a initial list of works to be accomplished on ground like Shirley had a list of operation, Alpheus had to repair certain equipment, and Srinivas and myself had a plan to reconstruct the biogas plant. We also were planning to undertake certain energy options & strategies. It was all about giving to them.
Except for Shirley, who had about 32 operations lined up, where she spent on an average about 11-12 hours in theatre. But God had different plans for rest of us, since the ground conditions were pretty different from what we had envisioned. We went with a view to contribute and encourage the people who are working on ground. But on the contrary we received a lot from this small community which is serving the tribal’s in the region.  This mail is about our learning
Purpose Driven Life:
Dayalu, who is a driver at AKS came to receive us at the station, his reason to work there was “I accepted the Lord, so I came to work here (AKS)”. We had discussion with many people in this community (doctors, nurses, technicians, admin & support staff, right upto the administrator), and was shocked to hear a same statement that they are working there because of the Love they received from Christ.
During one of the discussion, there was a suggestion to increase the revenue by having a centre near urban area where doctors can spend some time , which could fund the this rural set-up. An immediate response from one of the member was, “How will we fulfil our purpose of serving this people group?”
One of the doctors is suffering from a critical sickness and had to forego the treatment because his salary is so low (he would earn about 2 lakhs a month in metros). So the doctor suggested to his wife, can we move to urban area for sometime for the treatment. The wife’s reply was “Our presence (here) makes the difference”.
I personally understood what Paul meant when he said Phil 1:21-26 “I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me.”
Rejoicing Community:
Most (90%) of the staff’s salary is less than 10,000 despite many years of service, since the organisation couldn’t afford to pay. One of the management staff remarked “usually, our spending for the day will be from the collection of the previous day, but last week (Sept last week or Oct first week) we had to spend from the collection of the same day”. Last few months, their salaries were paid late and the salary was from the sale of the agriculture produce. Despite such uncertainities, we always found a cheerful community, they always rejoiced. We learnt what it meant to Rejoice in the Lord always.
Real Fellowship
If anyone is sick within the community, the food comes from the neighbours (No concept of hotel food). We can say that they don’t have option of a hotel. Houses and rooms not locked, kitchen gardens not fenced; each one serves the other. We may give many explanation, I only felt the 1Corinthians 13 statement of love true.
Work profile
The Director (also a surgeon) cleans the dung pit, PhD holder travels through villages to form self help groups, M-Tech person takes pre-school, X-ray technician acts as cashier, dental surgeon incharge of cattle farming, MBA-marketing does accounts, linguist writes text book for the kids and helps in cooking in mess for guests, doctors row the boat (way to go to the clinic), MCA holder repairs chairs (as if he’s mechanic) and many more. I can sum it up from a statement of a surgeon “I have learnt skills like hair dressing, while my surgical skills are rusting.”
We learnt that, these people are not there to display their super speciality skills to draw attention, but instead pitching in to fill the gap and rely on God for guidance. Ezekiel 22:30  ““I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it....”
Giving Community
Some of us struggle to give tithe (one tenth) for the Lord and some time have thought of having that tithe for ourselves or sometimes gave tithe to get rid of our guilt. (I personally don’t agree with tithe, as the Israelite was giving about 25% of income other than their offering. Further our giving standard is Macedonia church- 2Corinthians 8:1-5; poor widow, who gave everything she had Mark 12:43-44).
But here is a community, who have come down to draw one tenth of their salaries to exalt God and then from this small earning want to give to the needy people and serve God’s people.  Shirley narrated a incident, where a kid got a toy for winning a competition and was about to play with it. The parent asked “many kids don’t have a toy, can we give this toy to them?”. AND THE KID AGREED. Will our Kids agree? Can our parents THINK of asking?            We were ashamed at our giving.
Separated from Loved Ones, Yet unshaken from the cause
Remoteness of the location, and no proper education in the vicinity has separated the kids as young as 11 years from their parents. Yet the parents are unshaken from the cause.
Some are osterized by the parents and the community for the sake of their faith. Some of them are further rebuked because of their health condition. Yet determined in the Lord.
It made us to retrospect our faith?
Boldness
While we were returning, I heard the testimony from a boy, who is studying MSW. The student described his visit to the magistrate to make the affidavit about his conversion (requirement in Orissa). The magistrate had questioned him about the gains, he would get on becoming a Christian, the student explained there was nothing but the relationship with Christ. Then the magistrate explained to him the benefits he would loose as SC because he accepts Christ. The student explained, that he understands. The magistrate wondered and asked, “what makes you to accept this Christ”. The student said to us “I had the opportunity to share my witness to magistrate, which would have been otherwise impossible” .
When the Peter and John were persecuted, remember the prayer of early church in Acts 4:29 .
My words fail (neither am I a good narrator), I just urge you to be part of group for few days to experience the real fellowship. Our understanding of Christian fellowship has been degraded by the Christians who talk smooth words.
It is one of the most beautiful place to spend the holiday, atleast try it as a holiday.
Will write about how the working of this hospital in my next mail.

Thanks for sharing this email bro. Really an eye opener on the commitment of our fellow brothers and sisters and also in measuring our own commitments.
