Greetings BCM Friend:
LD 821, "An Act To Improve the Investigation and Prosecution of Cases That Involve Vulnerable Road Users," unanimously passed
in the Maine Senate last night, thanks in part to your efforts! We've heard from many legislators that they received notes from constituents,
and there is no doubt that had a big impact.
The bill is moving on to the House as soon as today, so we must ask you to act again.
We need you to send an email or make a call to your representative asking them to support this bill TODAY!
You can find out who the House representative is for your town
here.
Again, this bill seeks to establish a more consistent process whereby district attorneys are brought into the investigation of serious vulnerable
user crashes sooner to provide assistance to law enforcement with respect to gathering evidence and deciding on appropriate penalties to pursue.
The bill is supported by a majority of DAs in the state, and was amended in partnership with the Maine State Police. The floor
sheet created to support the bill can
be found here, and it includes a letter from Cumberland County District Attorney Jonathan Sahrbeck, who has worked hard to line up support in the DA community.
The message need not be long or detailed—a simple statement that you "support a more consistent legal response when people walking or bicycling are hit by dangerous drivers," and that the legislator
should vote to support LD 821, will be fine. Feel free to download and attach
the
floor sheet to your message.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to send a quick message to legislators to help the BCM ensure that dangerous drivers are held accountable when they kill or injure vulnerable roadway users.
