Dear Ballroom Dancers,
I was too late-by a day or two last time to offer my services as your
dance instructor-but sent a message to a few of you that I teach
American rather than International Ballroom style and have taught for
31 years at nearby Foothill College, 6 years at the Mountain View YMCA
on Sunday afternoons and in the past at other Bay Area locations. My
Foothill class starts tonight from 6:30-9pm on Tuesdays from Sept. 25
through Dec. 4 with our final/class party on Dec. 8 instead of Dec.
11.) There is no class on Thanksgiving weekend-which is a National
Holiday. I am happy to accommodate all in your group who wish to
attend.
Registration has already taken place and ended on Sept. 23 at
midnight, but I have a short grace period to add with an add code more
students through next week. I suggest all those interested show up if
you can, tonight and try the class free. Then take an add code and
start the (awful) registration process ASAP. If is free to register
with Foothill College-but is almost 10 pages of stuff on line (the
usual name, address, phone, etc.-but also where you went to high
school, listing your colleges, etc. etc. Don't leave any blanks or
the process starts you over-really this system is archaic and tedious
if you ask me), but the price for the class is great. Just $31 (it is
one unit of credit-though you can take the class pass no pass without
grades if you wish-you can sign up for pass no pass when you register
for the class), plus student fees and parking fee of $3. If you don't
want a student activities card which gets you into movies cheaper,
reduced public transportation fees, etc. the student fee can be
re-imbursed, as can the health fee-I believe if you have your own
health insurance.
After registering with the college there is a 1-4 day wait while it is
processed and you receive your student ID and personal portal. Then
you add Beginning Ballroom Dance-Beginning Ballroom/Social
DANCF004.A01, CRN # 21701, even if you are an advanced dancer.
Why-because the new state rules do not allow repeatability. You are
allowed to take beginning level once, intermediate level once and adv.
level only once in your lifetime. If you are an accomplished dancer,
I will do my best to find you more difficult steps and combinations to
challenge you, but start with beginning-if you haven't taken it
already.
If you have questions please email me at:
do...@dancingcruises.com or
phone me at home:
408-257-3455 and I will be happy to assist you.
Many thanks for reading all this-I feel anyone who wants to learn to
be a better dancer should be able to do so immediately. I am also
including my dance teaching schedule for those who can't make Tues.
nights. You can always be my guest once free at the YMCA on a Sunday.
L'Shana Tova,
Donna Frankel
This is what I sent the 25 students (ages 17-83) on Sunday:
"Dear Ballroom/Social Dance Students,
Congratulations-you made it through the horrendous registration
process and successfully added our class. As of tonight, students
wishing to join the 25 of you will need an add code from me-one more
layer to add to the reg process. I will be monitoring my email and
phone messages closely so that anyone new you send to me will get an
add code ASAP, so can join our class on Tues. If you will be out this
Tues-do let me know, I hope you can attend as we will lose no time in
starting to learn Meringue and Waltz. I was in the classroom Friday
and the a/c is working-but dress in layers-we get warm dancing even on
cold days. Unfortunately the new roof is not finished and we have
scaffolding surrounding our building and a lot of hammering going on.
Now if they could just hammer in time to our dance music? (Actually
they stop at 4:30 pm-so it will be quiet in the evenings when we
dance.) The good news is the gap is closing on our gender balance. We
are almost equal in numbers of ladies and gentleman (leaders and
followers).
I am working on our field trip/class party for Dec. 8, when I will be
escorting a group and studying dance in India. I negotiated a
discounted entrance fee of just $5 per person for you and any guests
you choose to invite for the field trip at the Pavilion in Palo
Alto-one of the largest dance floor in the USA! There will be a
lesson in Viennese Waltz from 8-9:30 pm. and then an open dance party
with cold drinks and light refreshments until midnight. Of course you
don't need to stay that late-but I recommend until 11pm. if you can.
We have 3 assistant teachers who will chaperone our field trip/party,
(they also attend every class to help you personally in your dance
styling, posture, transitions and steps and can answer most all your
dance questions if I am busy with another student.) A sub will give
the final exam from 8-9pm on Dec. 4 for those who wish a grade, and
teach a review of all the material with the help of my 3 assistant
teachers from 6:30-8pm-so come even if you do not take the exam. Our
class will also have a short performance in mid Nov. (before
Thanksgiving) when we will dance for a retirement home for elderly
seniors. This is optional, and not needed for those who don't want a
grade, but students tell me it is one of the most rewarding parts of
the class. When in your daily life do you receive applause? Well, at
this event, you will get much applause for your efforts and sincere
appreciation as elderly folks love to have visitors and enjoy seeing
you dance-even if we are not TV quality. (They love that you are live
and can shake their hand and chat with them, as they tend to watch too
much TV and have too few opportunities for live entertainment.)
You will be learning Meringue, Waltz, Cha Cha, Salsa, Tango, Rumba,
Foxtrot, Night Club Two Step, and Swing. Not in that order as I
select the order based on the weather. Our coldest days we will have
swing and salsa. Those who are in the intermediate and advanced
sections will review the above and have instruction in Viennese Waltz,
West coast Swing, Samba, Bolero, etc.
You will find the class upstairs of the weight room, entrance is next
to the weight room/gym near the footbridge end of the pool. As you
drive the Foothill counter clockwise loop (must have been a ballroom
dancer who designed it), just after the second light which is below
the footbridge, make a sharp right turn and drive up the hill to park
behind the offices. There is parking immediately to your left before
you ascend the hill, but then you have to walk up the hill-and I don't
want you tired out before we even begin dancing. You may choose to
take the bus (bus stop is under foot bridge-take either elevator or
stairs to footbridge, come across to pool and turn left to reach
classroom), or carpool to class, so I advise don't be in a hurry to
buy a quarter term parking permit unless you are taking other classes.
Parking is $3 per day to park.
You will be prepared for all your holiday parties this year-able to
dance with joy and confidence!
Best wishes-and I look forward to seeing you all this Tuesday, Sept.
25-please no flip flops or bare feet, but shoes you can dance in.
