Iknow that it is possible to convert ePubs to numerous other formats, and that is most convenient. But if I wanted to keep the format and highlight the text (just like in Apple Books or elsewhere) I am not allowed to. Is there any way? Could this be an idea for future development?

Not good enough to use the terrific feature of DEVONthink that enables easy access to files in their native app, e.g. Apple Books? Do your highlighting, bookmarking, and reading there in a secondary window of Apple Books holding that epub. No different really using a subset of features that DEVONthink might be able to provide (at some cost to them) in a secondary window. No?

My workaround is to convert epubs to pdf with calibre if I need them in Devonthink BUT the conversion provokes MANY little mistakes, missed letters, breaks, that are annoying when I need to read / quote the texts

It happened. Few lost characters that did not bother me so much. Now I cannot go back and look for them but if it happens again will post the screenshot. Otherwise calibre serves me well and it will be my way to deal with epub until devonthink can deal with them. PS: Are you a developer of calibre?

My mother has an iPad Mini 1, iOS 9.0.2. She used to be able to download books from some websites by tapping a link on the page for the .epub and it would show that "Open in iBooks..." screen. Now when she taps the link nothing happens, the loading bar goes across then the page stays the same. I can replicate it on her iPad, but mine (Air 2, 9.0.2) has no issue downloading her books. I tried to download onto mine and email to her but that didn't seem to work. Copying and pasting the direct download link into the address bar did nothing. Is this an issue with iOS or should I contact the website? Thanks.

I was having the same problem. One suggestion was to reset all settings. That worked for others, but it did not for me. Then I read a suggestion to clear my history, and it worked! You just go to settings> safari> clear history and website data. I don't know if it was doing both that worked or if it was just clearing my history. You might try just clearing history first and if that doesn't work, "reset all settings" then "clear history". Now I can download all epubs normally. Hope this works for you!

First, any help is truly appreciated. I just did a whole Lynda.com tutorial on creating epubs from Indesign and managed to get a pretty clean file. I have only one unresolved issue. I have two tables in the file that are just lists of words. I used the table function, hoping it would reflow better in an epub. In InDesign, my tables have no borders. When I export it, there is a thin black border around the all the cells. The cells are also much too high. I tried setting the cells to a fixed height, but this didn't change anything. Can anyone suggest a way to:

As for tables, they should only be used for truly tabular data, not to fake columns. These are called reflowable EPUBs for a reason. Stop trying to force what you think it should look like on your readers. It's more trouble than it's worth and will invariable cause problems.

The only option for the table border that I am aware of is to open the ePub and edit the .CSS directly in a text editor. (Change the extension to .zip and use the extract command.) You will want to change the border to none:

I wouldn't have used a table. I'd have used a split column. Wouldn't convert the bullets to text either as you'll lose the ul and li markup. Better off using proper styles in InDesign which I am almost positive were not used. Adjust the spacing there.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I made some tests, trying out the different suggestions. First off, it is a reflowable epub 3. Sorry, should have mentioned that. I was viewing it in iBooks. I will try to view it across other platforms as soon as I figure this out.

BarbBinder, I tried your suggestion and it worked as you said. Screenshot below. I understand about changing the border in CSS at the end. However, I have a lot of bullet lists in this epub. By converting them all to text am I losing any functionality? They look the same in the epub. Screen shot with bullets converted to text.

Several people suggested using split columns, which I tried too and yes, it converts to one column in the epub. I might as well make it just one column and be done with it, since I made a separate indd file for my print version.

Finally, keep in mind that not everyone can actually see. I'm sure Bevi will concur that accessibility is very important. While it may be difficult to make your material 100% accessible, the things you're talking about here will actually make it less accessible and that, IMO, is inexcusable.

I'm aware of this question but it is now quite old. If I create a collection in iBooks on OSX (Yosemite, 10.10.3) and add a book (epub - not puchased via iBooks), it does not sync to my iPad (3rd gen, iOS 8.2) over wifi. The name of the collection itself is synced to the iPad but it is empty. Both devices are on the same wireless LAN and connected to the internet.

I believe syncing used to be via iTunes and this was the only way I could get books to sync to my iPad previously but this should now work using only iBooks. I have already performed the 'Move books from iTunes' operation from the iBooks menu on OSX.

I had this issue before when moving over to iBooks app entirely. What resolved this for me was "Authorize Computer" within iBooks via "Store>Authorize Computer" in the menu (which for some odd reason wasn't authorized) and all the content(iBooks purchased and third party epubs) I had synced on iBooks started synching to my iPhone/iPad.

I solved this by selecting it in iTunes (on the Mac) > iPad > Books* > Sync Books. Then sync the iPad (I use USB, but I expect wi-fi sync would work). That's with "Selected books" chosen at the top. Choosing "All books" should work too.

Another useful option, try this in Firefox; -US/firefox/addon/45281/, a fairly good extension for the Firefox web browser that lets you read .epubs from the browser, especially good since on Ubuntu you are likely to be using Firefox and it is usually kept open when you are using your computer.

lucidor at does a decent job. I completely removed calibre from my system because it doesn't let me leave the books in my own directory structure. (Then spent hours moving the thousands of books into a directory structure I like by hand.) I couldn't find coolreader to try. Okular I like but the extensions did not work on epub for me. fbreader works but you have to open it up first and then the book whereas lucidor you can right click from the file manager to associate epubs to lucidor.

I just finished editing a book which is 420 pages long. I had started from a Word document but then made the same mistake as others have of editing the document in Publisher and so the source is no longer the same as the prepared and edited version in Publisher.

I exported this out as a PDF which is fine for having the book printed but I also want an ePub version and another for Kindle. Unfortunately Publisher does not have any option to export in these formats.

I had hoped that importing the book into QuarkXpress would resolve this for me but there are so many anomalies that I may as well start from scratch. It made me think maybe I should have thought of this before I started the project in Publisher.

A workaround to get a reflowable ePub document from a Publisher document would be to add a DOCX export function. A DOCX document could be loaded into programs allowing reflowable ePub exporting, among which Apple Pages. Currently, the only way to exchange data between Publisher and Pages is by copying&pasting, but this only allows exchanging some of the data, and not the full content (images, internal links and footnotes are excluded).

I hope that Affinity (Serif) hurray the ability to export to different formats soon. I much prefer Publisher to my QuarkXpress (even though QXP is more powerful and even lets me export a file to HTML5, which I use for a magazine I produce)

I came upon this while searching for ways to create epub, and when Affinity Publisher will have epub export. I have used MS word for this, which seems to work fine with text-heavy books and if the book is released only at KDP. But even with an extremely limited experience in all tech-related things, I seem to see coarseness and waywardness in epubs based on Word.

When will Affinity have epub reflowable option? What great news the release of that would be to those waiting for it, who search for it to find out the state of things as regards to it. Please release it in the near future!

I'm also looking for an ePub option. I write manuals for products and usually use MS Word. I'm currently setting up a template in Publisher, but would prefer to have some interactive elements in the document. I have used iBooks before because of its interactive features, but iBooks Author was abandoned years ago. There are some interactive features in Apple Pages ePub offering, so I may use that instead of Publisher this time around. The machine has a 24 inch touchscreen, hence why I would like to make the manual interactive. The gallery feature and embedded video features of Apple Pages ePub documents are ideal for step-by-step instructions and overviews of the product. What's missing is the zoomable annotated image feature of iBooks, but I can make do without that.
