Hello BetaPsichers! :)

How are you all? Hope that everyone has now settled during the first two weeks at University this academic year, and that first years are getting used to the routine, the timetable, and the venues; something that less than two weeks ago, seemed to be nothing but a labyrinth to all freshers!  Now that Fresher's Week is over, let's recap what BetaPsi has been up to during Freshers' Week!

-------------------------------------------------

Fresher's Week 2014

Fresher's Week: the time of the year in which student apathy is clearly not evident on Campus, and student activism dominates the scene; organisations' stands packed with students, live entertainment, debates, competitions, mascots (Brainy :P), campus tours, and social interaction at quad, and in the organisations' tent, among many other things, were characteristic of this year's Fresher's Week.

BetaPsi did indeed have quite an eventful week! From first years excited in anticipation to what awaits them, and eager to become BetaPsi members, to 2nd 3rd years, and H.Dip students looking forward to a great year ahead, or at least, hoping for a great year... Eating competitions, where our Vice-President's food-consuming skills were put to test (and Steve's BetaPsi polo shirt got a taste of pizza topping too) , pillow fights, during which our Events Coordinator, Bernard Laus, delivered a Beta-Knock Out to his opponent to give BetaPsi the win, and a gooey mess that our PRO, Reb, had to put her hands into in order to find a 5c coin before members of other organisations; a task which she failed to complete just by a split second!  The information session with first years, and the campus tour, were also among the highlights of the week, where several BetaPsi exec members gladly met first year psychology students, and gave them an idea on what BetaPsi is all about. We appreciated the positive response which proceeded these events!

It is important to mention that her excellency, the President of Malta, The Prime-Minister, the Leader of Opposition, and several other VIPs, visited the stands, including BetaPsi's. One of the highlights which everyone talked about throughout the whole week was in fact the infamous selfie which Dr. Joseph Muscat took with Brainy; a selfie in which the Prime Minister got photobombed by yours truly, Sec-Gen Andrew Camilleri!

The Living with Schizophrenia debate was a great way to close BetaPsi's Fresher's Week. This debate was held in anticipation to Mental Health Awareness Day, which was on Friday, the 10th of October. Over 50 students were present to this debate, which was moderated by BetaPsi's President Petra Borg, in the presence of Bernard Caruana and Daniela Calleja Bitar on panel. We would like to thank Richmond Foundation for this successful collaboration. More information about this debate can be found in the following link, featuring a well written article by Insite:

Now it is time to get a glimpse inside our packed calendar of events:

Psyched Live-In : Outside the Box

The much anticipated Psyched Live In is back! The Psyched Live-in is without a doubt one of the most anticipated BetaPsi events of the year, and this year round, we're going Outside the Box!  We’ll be exploring the fields of psychology that go beyond our traditional lecture setting, including Drama Therapy, Mindfulness and Hypnosis, and explore what makes them an important addition to the psychology field. We have several other activities that span over the three days, including a Crazy 88, and the infamous Madhatter, at Beachaven!

The Live In will be held between the 7th and the 9th of November at the NSTS Residence. The live in aims to bring together all psychology students to become better acquainted to each other, so don't miss this chance to get to know your fellow course mates outside the lecture hall, and spend an unforgettable weekend with them! We are excited to see you all there!

You can get your application from our office. These are our office hours for the rest of this week: Wednesday 12-2pm, Thursday: 1-3pm, Friday: After 10am. We will be posting more office hours on our facebook page.

MSPF

The National Student Travel Foundation (Malta) – NSTF, in collaboration with BetaPsi and the Psychology Department at University, are pleased to announce the launching of the Malta Student Psychology Forum (MSPF) in 2014. This programme targets all students interested in psychology and social wellbeing. Students aged 16-21 may apply for the MSPF. The aim of the MSPF is to encourage research, analysis and presentation on psychological topics to help encourage them to see the importance of psychology in one’s everyday life. In teams of two, students will give a short presentation on the topic at hand and a debate will take place on said presentation, all of which will be graded by a panel of expert judges. There will be a total of six sessions, which will be addressed by a guest speaker specialised in the field being discussed.

In 2014, the winners took part in a conference organised by BetaPsi whereas students from the Netherlands visited Malta and underwent a number of psychology related workshops!

Applications close on the 17th of October. An information session will be held on the 24th of October, for those teams who apply. For applications, visit the NSTS website, or click on the following link:

SSS: Living With Dyslexia

Throughout the academic year, BetaPsi organises monthly informal gatherings for both students and staff members, during which a particular topic related to psychology is discussed. The aim of the Student Staff Seminar is for us to discuss Psychology-related matters outside of the lecture-hall environment, to give the discussion an informal spin to it. The speaker for October's seminar will be Dr. Ruth Falzon, who will be speaking about her experience of working with Dyslexic individuals. Dyslexia is the most common learning difficulty and most recognized reading disorder. Therefore we have teamed up with Ruth Falzon to bring you a workshop in which people get more familiar with this condition. This SSS will include a background of what it is like living with Dyslexia.

Join us on the 24th of October at the KSU Common Room, at 12pm! Everyone is invited, so if you know any friends who are not Psychology students, but are interested in such topics, they are more then welcome to join as well.

EFPSA - Social Impact Initiative

Specifically on World Mental Health Day, Friday 10th October, EFPSA (European Federation of Psychology Students' Associations) issued a call for those who would like to volunteer in one of their social impact campaigns, entitled 'Mind the Mind'. BetaPsi will be participating in this campaign, and we are really looking forward to this initiative! If you are interested to get involved in this, contact BetaPsi's International Officer, Clara Chetcuti, on clarach...@gmail.com
