Hello BetaPsiches!

How has your summer been so far? Ours has been awesome! Since it has been a while since the previous issue of the BetaPsi newsletter, it is more than fitting to recap together on what the organisation has been up to this month.

Student Exchange: Malta - Netherlands 2014
BetaPsi collaborated with SPS-NIP Netherlands Instituut van Psychologen, and organised a bilateral student exchange between Malta and the Netherlands. 19 Dutch psychology Students and 19 Maltese psychology students participated in this exchange.

The group of Dutch students came to Malta on the 28th of July, and joined the Maltese students in a number of activities, including workshops related to the field of Psychology, specifically targeting the theme of 'Identity', cultural visits; such as visits to Valletta, the Harbor area, and the Marsaxlokk feast, and a number of other leisure and educational activities, including a treasure hunt in the old capital: Mdina, a night out at Paceville, Wine tasting, a day spent at the islands of Gozo and Comino, and many other activities. It was a jam-packed week, to say the least! The Dutch participants left Malta on the 3rd of August.

It was then time for us, Maltese psychology students, to take-off to Brussels, from where we then took a couple of train rides to Utrecht, Holland on the 7th of August! We participated in a series of workshops, with the theme of  'Challenge Your Senses', and also embarked on a four day experience which included educational visits, such as a visit to 'Bartimeus', an institution for blind people, and cultural visits, during which we could appreciate what cities in the Netherlands, such as Utrecht, and the capital, Amsterdam, have to offer. We were also given a tour in the infamous Red Light District in Amsterdam. We also had our fair share of great time together while socialising through several activities, such as a Masked Party and Crazy 88 in the center of Utrecht. Sadly, we left Utrecht to the Schipol Airport in Amsterdam to board on a plane back to Malta, on the 11th of August.

One can learn a lot from such experiences, including knowledge about different cultures, and also about the way of life of Psychology students in other countries, in this case, the Netherlands. So therefore, on a personal note, as a person who participated in this exchange, this is an opportunity not to be missed, so if any of you encounter such an opportunity in the future, don't miss it!

On behalf of BetaPsi, I would like to thank SPS-NIP, all the members of the Dutch committee, all the members of the Maltese committee, all the participants from both countries, and anyone else whose contribution aided towards making this exchange huge success.

BetaPsi at Sowing Seeds Together
BetaPsi Vice-President, Steve Borg, and Educational Officer, Nicola Falzon, attended a conference, entitled 'Sowing Seeds Together', organised by KSU, together with the contribution of her Excellency, the President of Malta, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca.

Student organisations were invited for this consultation conference at the Verdala Palace, on the 23rd of August. Several workshops took place at this conference, focusing on how student associations can contribute together in major events and causes, such as the annual Christams on Campus, a campaign which is annually held at the University of Malta, in order to raise funds for L-Istrina, and other associations which help people in need.

The initiative of students when it comes to activities such as fund-raising events, and other events of major importance on a national level, is vital to the well being of our society in general, and therefore, BetaPsi would like to congratulate KSU, and the Presidency of Malta, for giving such an opportunity to all student organisations on campus.

Other News:

That was August 2014 so far, in a nutshell. Now let's all see what's in store for the coming days!

BYOB - Bring Your Own BBQ: Student Gathering #2

The aim of student gatherings is to encourage psychology students to meet up outside the conventional 'lecture hall environment' while having time to socialise, chill, and have fun!

Don't forget to BYOB, yes, Bring Your Own BBQ! The BBQ can be a cheap one that can be used for 2 hours and thrown away afterwards or simply bring one you have at home, we are going to leave the decision to you. It would be advisable that you form a group to use the same BBQ. The gathering will start at around 6:00 PM so there will be enough time for a quick swim!

See you all on Saturday at Ghajn Tuffieha Bay, in the Golden Bay area!
