#CodeAcross NYC is a two day festival of, or related to, civic technology and government data.
We are bringing together government, community based organizations, innovators, academics, and individuals to create effective uses of NYC’s data. CodeAcross NYC is open to all ages and all who want to improve NYC’s data!
#CodeAcross NYC is in partnership with International Open Data Hackathon and Code for America’s CodeAcross.

Problem we are addressing:
With the signing of the City’s transformative open data law, thousands of datasets have pouring out of NYC agencies. New York City is the number one “open data” city in America. Yet, this data can seem daunting.
Through CodeAcross NYC, we reach across the city and demystify the City’s data. For two days, will teach about existing datasets. Second, we will crack open PDFs and databases to make new data sets. Lastly, we challenge you to create tools and visualizations on top of the largest collection of municipal data!

Objectives:
* Teach how to use and interpret NYC’s Open Data.
* Make new open data by scraping or unlocking static data.
* Create tools and prototypes that help us understand the city’s open data.

Teaching and Learning:
For the weekend, we will have unconference sessions focusing on datasets and tools. Additionally, we will have a limited availability workshop on mapping open data. This workshop will empower you to use NYC’s open data. To attend this workshop, you must register for the "Mapping Open Data Workshop."

Themed Challenges:
In addition to classes and workshops, we are outlining a series of challenges that will improve NYC’s data and its use. Join one or bring your own.
* Improving real time notification data and tools - Since the launch of the mobile era, we are accustomed to information coming to us. At CodeAcross, we will focus on enhancing datasets and building tools that bring information into the palm of our hands.
* Maps and visualizations - One simple way to understand data is to see it mapped or visualized. At CodeAcross, we will take on a number of datasets and improve their mapping ability. Additionally, we are challenging attendants to make data gorgeous and simple to read.
* Publicly accessible machine readable data - To help the City breath life into its data, we are challenging the community to take existing reports, PDFs, and databases and machine them into structured data.
* Open data science using OSEMN - As the city’s datasets have blossomed, we challenge the community to use their analytical skills and make sense of the city’s data.
